Cam follower mix up

Post by sonicVR »

I am working on a 2005 S60R with a bad headgasket. I removed the cam followers NOT in correct location and now am putting it back together I have done numerous older whiteblock H/G's and did not even take into consideration the cam followers NOT being hydraulic on these R engines? Anybody know where I might be able to sort out the correct follower loactions?

OK, this is long and is more than what VIDA explains.
This is done with head on block or on bench. The tappets are marked on underside, find two of the same number. Start with intake or exhaust side, your choice.
Fit two tappets into the bores for cylinder one and then lay cam in with lobes 180 degrees away from the tappets. Hold pressure downward on cam while checking clearance with feeler gauges. Volvo has a pretty simple tool that bolts to head and pushes down the cam and has to be put on and off for every step. You may fabricate something or use light touch with feeler gauges and not lift cam up against your holding force. Write down the clearance readings. Repeat the steps for all the cylinders on both sides.
Now: the spec is .20 +/- .03 (.17 -.23 mm) intake and .40mm +/-.03 (.37-.43mm) exhaust.
Example 1: using 15.20mm tappets throughout then you take your first reading, example intake with .25mm measured. The clearance is .05mm large so the tappet needs to be .05 bigger than the 15.20 used. Tappets are in even numbers so a 15.26 or 15.24 is good but 15.28 or 15.22 is OK due to the range allowance.
Ex 2: 15.20 used and a clearance of .16mm is measured. The clearance is .04 too small so the tappet needs to be .04 smaller. A 15.16mm is ideal but 15.14 or 15.18 will work.
You write down the ideal tappet number of each valve as you go and then after every measurement is made and all computations are done you have a list of what is needed and you begin your sorting. You will not have the ideal tappet for many of them and will have to go with others in the OK range. You may need a few and I know of no other source other than dealer.
Remember the tappet gets bigger if clearance is too large and tappets gets smaller if clearance is too small.
To see that you are doing it right you can fit a couple of tappets and measure your clearance.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one that has done this!

I have a 2002 S60 2.4L and had a blown head gasket. I followed the detailed directions for changing the head gasket on a 850 I found on MVS (LOVE this forum!) and for a amateur like myself did pretty good with no major issues....until this morning.

We got the cylinder head off the other night and set it down right-side up. This morning I was taking it to the machine shop and turned the head over to look on the bottom to see how the surface looked (was taking it to get a pressure test and resurface). When I turned it over all 20 of the cam followers (or tappets, not sure which is the 'official' name of these!) fell off. DUH!!! :-( I didn't think anything of it until the guy at the machine shop ask if I numbered them. I had not. He showed me on the bottom of the follower where to find the number (very fait) however, I have not been able to find ANY diagram that shows if there is a order to these. I was at least pleased to find this post, but have a question.

Again, I am a novice at all this and really have not done much major repairs outside of brakes, oil changes and belts. So, why would this cam followers be different sizes? I would have expected to have all 20 valves be the same size.

Also, is there any diagram showing the order of the different size followers by cylinder??

Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated!

On a side note, I have been taking about 100 pictures of EVERY STEP for the S60 head gasket and will try to add it to the post on the changing head gasket for the 850 (some 80 page PDF doc). Thought it might help others see the difference I found compared to that version. ALthough most of it was just the same place and size of bolts & screws.

Thanks guys!

Robert
