ETM Symptoms but no ETS or Check Engine Light??

Post by C704me »

EDIT: I do see a post in the repair database from Jim Rollins regarding his ETM failure with no ETS light. (Although it seems that there was a code posted).

This is my first post (sorry a bit long) but I've been running across the forum for several months reading about the ETM issues recall etc.

WE have a 2001 C-70 with 40,000 original miles. IN fact, until 2009, it had 19,000 miles (weekend car).

The short story: It still has the "white label" ETM. It has NOT been replaced under recall (which I believe is just about finished for our 2001 now).

Like many, the dealer can't see a code and won't do the repair. (I guess I can't really blame them....) well... yes I can...

My question:

Our car seems to miss (mostly) and surge( very rare almost never) while driving (NEVER while slowing down or at a stop though). Sometimes it's fine for about 20-30 miles but generally it does it pretty much every day now vs occasionally the way it used to.

I've been searching and searching to see if anyone has had any other symptoms that "mimic" the ETM failure but was caused by something else??

Right now we have no codes on the OBD-II scanner, No apparent codes when the dealer checked it (I would imagine they would have let me know if they saw a code - and of course the car didn't do anything when they had it on a test drive).

I've replaced plugs just because I felt the need to check them and the coils. (coils are the originals). MAF looks good.

I currently have a BMW 540 and Mercedes E class and those seem to throw a code if you have the lighter inserted wrong so our C-70 kind of has us puzzled. I can't imagine not having a check engine light or ETM light (or some type of indicator) when the car runs like it does.

It NEVER stalls. Never Surges or misses at idle or coming to a stop. While driving it does exhibit symptoms like the ETM failure. Has anyone else experienced this?? I felt this may be the best place to post the question.

I'm pretty handy around a garage, have built 4 race cars (1/4 mile / Bracket Cars), engine rebuilds foreign and domestic, suspension work and custom chassis work so I don't mind "digging into something. (As long as I can diagnose it and not just throw parts at it).

Any suggestions would be a great help. I don't see anything out of the ordinary but I'm hoping someone may have gone through this at some point..

Thanks for any info
