Well our 2000 AWD V 70 automatic wagon left us stranded without a warning. It showed no sign of trouble and just died in the midde of traffic light. So I pulled it home on trailer and did some simple tests on it. Battery OK, starter cranks, Sparkplugs fire, starting fluid did not help, sparkplugs wet when pulled out after a short cranking, but not a single fire in the engine. So I took it to the dealer for $80 diagnosis as all regular shops where not able due the lack of computers systems. Computer codes did not show anything. Dealer proudly announced that my car needs a new engine! So I asked why they think that. They replied that 3 of the cilinders do not have the compression. But they did not want to further investigate.
By then I found a guy in Tulsa who has a little Volvo shop. His initial estimate was $3500 to replace the bent valves due to timeing belt slip. Timing belt was replaced at 109K (by dealer accourding to sticker) currently running 159K.
I looked at some sites for new engine and I can get a used one between 500 to 1000 plus shipping.
Any advice on what to do? What would be a reasonable engine swap price?

Have you considered going after the shop that changed the TB?
Sounds like fishy business...Like they left it loose or didn't swap
in a new tensioner, idler, etc. Worth a shot.

The timing belt was changed at 109K and now it is 159K. Do you think they are still responsible?
Other hand I looked at the belt and it does not look bad. Could something else give into?

Run a compression test (All 5 cylinders) and post the numbers back. If the timing belt still looks good then it is likely good.
You should be able to buy a compression gauge for under US $50.00 about anywhere - even a cheap one will tell me what I need to know.

I would definitely get yourself a second opinion. I can't imagine that the timing belt would fail and you would not have heard a big bang or something.
If it is the engine in the end, I would swap in a good used engine only if the rest of the car is in good shape.

Thanks I will try to do the compression test. I have kept the car in shape so I defently try to keep it around.

I have a similar issue, it ran for my wife the night before and the next morning it wouldn't fire. It would turn over fine and sputter once in a while like it wanted to start but no go. Local shop said that it probably needed a new timing belt but the marks seemed to be ok with respect to the alignment marks. They said that the belt seemed a little loose but it didn't look like it skipped a tooth. They wanted to look at the valve gap (by pulling the valve cover) but said it is a 10 hr proceedure just to perform this. They found 2 or 3 cylinders that were not holding pressure also but it has used oil since we bought it (used with 21k on it) so I didn't feel that this was what was causing the no start issue. The car has 217k on it and we were going to retire it soon so I can't justify the cost of checking the valve gap or putting a used low mileage engine in it. Let me know what you find out. My shop is going to tinker with it a little longer to see if any other ideas come up. I personally think it is leading to an electrical issue (possibly some type of crank or cam sensor or an ignition problem). Thanks.
Since then I have replaced the engine with 42k miles from Erie and got a life back to it. But the Engine light turned on right away. OBD2 says that the 5th cilinder is misfiring and the fuel consumption is 18 instead of 22. When I drive you can feel the minor misses in the engine. Any advise? Where to look. I have checekd all the usual spark plugs etc without success.
On the old engine the timing belt was fine and there is no way it could have jumped as suggested by the Volvo specialist. Could a low RPM kill an engine with a misfire? But I have yet to take the cover off to see the damage inside.
