Timing belt job/removing crank pulley with cheap impact

Post by wheelsup »

Just wanted to let you guys know, if any of you want to go the easy route and remove the crank pulley when you do your timing belt, I have a cheap $30 impact from Lowes that pulled off that 30mm nut. It took about 10 seconds of hammering. Quick and easy!

I bought it in their $80 kit but I believe this is it separately:

http://www.lowes.com/pd_100966-47120-SG ... t%2Bimpact

Mine is listed as 350 ft-lbs on the back and that is the same as the one linked to.

Of course you need an air compressor. If you don't have one you could always make an excuse to go buy one :). I was running a 50' 3/8" line with 1/4" couplers, and set to around 130 psi at the regulator which was a running 100 psi, so probably not even 90 psi at the tool. Needless to say for $30 I was impressed, and it would make this job a heck of a lot easier/less hassle!

I bought a 2135qtimax new, I was NOT impressed for the price. I wanted something USA made, or at least assembled in the USA, so that threw Harbor Freight out but their 1/2" Earthquake is rumored to be really good, it's basically a copy of the IR Thundergun.

If the Lowes $30 guns are still as good as mine is, their $90 one is probably incredible. Look at Northern Tool as well, they have a composite gun on sale for $109 I believe that is really good. Also look at Aircat/Nitrocat, assembled in the USA and they put out a lot of power. More money but also more power.

You also can't go wrong with a used IR 231 series, you can pick them up in pawn shops for really cheap like $25-$30. Tune up kits are pretty cheap too, and two new hammers are like $25. That is an iconic gun, all metal, if oiled it'll last a long time.

If you are buying new these guys have pretty good prices

I removed the crank pulley when I did the V70's belt a few weeks back. It sure does make the job easier. No fiddling trying to fit that new t-belt in behind the pulley! I'd recommend it to anyone doing the job if they have the tools available.

Hi Guys,
I am getting way deep on my 1999 S70 Turbo, was limpping along with the bad ETM and oil leak from the trap until the starter went. Now I am looking at Starter, ETM, timming belt, complete PVC system and all kinds of old hoses, I was a mechanic and like good manuals to study first. I can't find much on the S70 turbos, I've replaced a lot of timing belts but hear a kinds of warnings on this one.
Does anyone know where I can get a good manual or other sources of info? I bought the UK version of haynes and it's not much help. they only mention the turbo once. I olso see what looks like a variable cam but its on the rear cam the all docs I haread say it would be on the front.
I bought this car to get around while I put a motor in our 2001 camry, now I am spending a ton of cash and time on it. I hope it will be worth it for one of kids.

I've never used a cheap air impact gun I thought was worth anything. When removing crank nuts one can jam a breaker bar on the end and use the starter motor to break the nut lose.
Life would be enjoyable if it wasn't so painful to live.

I've had a cheap impact wrench from sears for 5 years now. Best $24 i ever spent. But i'm too lazy to remove the crank pulley.
Ambitious but rubbish

Maybe you found this out already, but there is a downloadable 850 manual on the forum. Most of the engine stuff is the same, except I think the 99 ECU might be different. I've found it very useful with my 98 V70.

If your kids are close to you geographically, this might work. If they are away, I would give one of them the Camry and drive the Volvo myself. The Volvo is a great car to drive, but will take a lot of maintenance and you don't want to have to drive hundreds of miles to work on their cars. My solution before my kids left for college was to buy two used (4 and 6 year old) Honda Civics. They both got thru college with no breakdowns and one of them drove cross country after college and kept the car another 5 years. I have a 91 Camry as a back up car that has never had a breakdown on the road and the only repair other than routine maintenance was a drive axle and a brake caliper.

Be careful to check and make sure the problem is the starter before replacing it. These cars have a tendency to get an intermittent "no crank" condition due to open circuits in the key switch, auto trans PNP switch, starter cables, etc.

Yeah that is why I posted this, $30 impact and all, pretty cheap but it does the job! Even removed the axle nuts on a 95 850, which spent half it's life in upstate NY.
