Dad's 2001 S40 has had this happen a couple of times under heavy acceleration (but not always). He lays on the throttle, and shortly thereafter, his CEL starts flashing and the car starts missing. CEL keeps flashing a bit after the car starts missing.
Looking around, we learned that this is most likely a plug/coil pack issue, and we know the car could probably use both -- he drives a lot of miles (100-mile round-trip commute), so he goes through these things like candy.
But, when we hook up an ODBII reader (Equus 3030 Innova), it doesn't find any codes. Based on what I'm seeing on other threads, it should definitely leave a history of misfire codes. So, is something else going on with the car? Or is the code reader just no good?
Also, if it doesn't turn out to be the coil packs or plugs, any ideas?
CEL flashes, missing... no codes?
