Hello.
I just bought a 98 S70 T5 last week with 179k miles & the car had a few issues, but figured for the price I paid I could fix it up & enjoy it. When I first got it, it had a cel. The codes were for a MAF & misfire on cylinder 1. The car was also smoking heavily when you'd let off the throttle after accelerating (lightly or heavily) & the engine had lots of oil all over it. I replaced the MAF sensor & it would still misfire on cyl #1. I then replaced the wires, plugs, cap, & rotor & the car ran great minus the oil leaks, the smoking even cleared up. As far as the oil leaks Im certain my pcv system is clogged & I have a replacement kit on the way from IPD. Well the other day I did an oil change on it (used castrol 10-30 fully synthetic) & drove down to Spokane (about 120 miles). The next day I had to do some running around town & noticed in my mirror that the smoking has returned whenever I let off the throttle. Its so bad at times that the road is invisible behind me (luckily no cops were around). Also, when I went to head home last night I stopped to get fuel & checked my oil & it was not even registering on the stick. So I went in & bought a quart just as the store was closing & it was still not registering on the dipstick. The car seems to run fine, but just smokes like crazy when you let off, even after barely accelerating up to speed without going over 2500rpm, and pukes oil over the top & front of the engine. Any ideas on the smoking? Im thinking valve guides, but figured i'd ask you guys as this is my first Volvo. Also, is it normal for them to puke that much oil because of a blocked pcv?
Another question I thought of after I ordered the pcv kit, is there a way to just get rid of all the pcv stuff & put a little filter on the top of the motor where the line goes in so I would'nt have to worry about it clogging again? Thanks in advance & ive really enjoyed the site so far!

Changing the PCV is a must as soon as possible. I don't know if you should drive the car like that either. If the car is still blowing smoke after you change the PCV, I would take a closer look at the turbo seals and your engine compression.
Thanks. What really puzzled me is that it quit smoking after the plug wires, plugs, etc. Except it did have a small amount of smoke after letting off after WOT. Then all of a sudden its smoking worse than a modded out diesel truck. Will the pcv valve cause it to puke that much oil & smoke that bad?
Well the PCV kit arrived today. I was wondering if it would be better to just replace it or since the intake is going to be off anyways, go ahead & pull the whole head if you guys think this may be a valve issue?

Do the PCV system and see what happens - it may just be terribly clogged up. If it's terribly clogged, you're lucky that it's throwing up oil out of the top of the engine rather than your seals.
In your case, THOROUGHLY clean all holes in the engine block - top of the valve cover, and the 2 lower ones. Get a long, wire brush to shove through all of them (pet stores will sell something useful for cleaning canister filters on a fish tank).
Replace the oil cap seal afterwards, and check that all pressure is gone.

Great. I'll change it out tomorrow as long as its not snowing. Thanks a lot for the tip on the wire brush. As far as the seals on the motor go, I hope they are'nt leaking as its hard to tell as the whole front of the motor is covered in oil under the intake manifold.
Just figured i'd let everyone know that i finally got the pcv system changed out on the car yesterday & did an oil change today. I was out of town for awhile & just got back. Ive put about 70 miles on it so far, luckily it seems to be good. Right after I did the repair & let the car warm up I took it for a little ride & opened it up & it smoked a little after that, but other than that no smoking. Tomorrow I'll be putting about 200 miles on it, so hopefully all is well now.
In all reality I think it took me longer cleaning my engine than it did to do the repair. All together about 4 hours. I had the intake manifold off in about 45 minutes. Then probably spent about 2 hours cleaning/ degreasing the engine & about 1 1/2 hrs putting it back together. Its been running good so far. Put about 200 miles on it today & my oil level has not changed & no smoke.

Woot!
And congrats on being less clumsy than me
Took me a really long time. I did another in about 3 1/2 hours later on with some help.
