Running motor with engine off

Post by turbotim2 »

My wife's 96 850 GLT wagon just started to have this issue. When she stops (shuts the engine off and removes the key) there is an electric motor that sounds like a blower that comes on and runs for 5+ minutes then shuts off. Tonight I noticed that it came on a second time after the initial 5 minute run time. It is not the cooling fan but a motor underneath the battery. Mine has never done this before so I am curious as to the cause. Any ideas?

Just an update, whatever that motor is, ran on and off all night long last night. Again it seems to be located directly below the battery and looks like it is tied into the airbox with a hose. Any help on what this is would be great. Thanks.

That sounds like the airpump; never heard of it coming on by itself though  ; rather odd. I'm sure that there is a relay for it somewhere that is faulty, but I'm honestly not sure where it is (maybe trace the wires?) as I thankfully don't have an air pump.

Well I took off the pan under the front of the car to get a better look at the pump. It turns out that the relay is mounted right next to it. It does seem to be an air pump but it only blows air into the air cleaner box. Usually air pumps provide air to the exhaust and/or catalytic conv. Anyway, I unplugged the wire to the pump from the relay and got it to stop but I don't know what kind of consequences I will get. I will let you all know.
