1992 240 Trip meter reset button is broken

Post by hawkboy647 »

Hi all, this is my first post to the site as I've recently bought a nice one owner 1992 240 DL with 117k. It runs great but has a few issues, most of which I can troubleshoot myself.

1. None of the power windows work and the fuse is intact. I figure it's the relay. I think its behind the center console vents but have not looked to see how that comes apart.

2. Fuel Gauge does not read..always reads empty. I figure its the sender in the tank. I've seen some good info on removing this.

3. The trip meter button on the odometer is broken off and the reset is not functioning, however the odometer works fine..I can take the button out. I tried reaching in with a screwdriver to try and activate the reset but something inside is broken. Is this an easy fix. I figured it was be easier/less expensive fix than dealing with the fuel gauge sender right now. IF i can reset the trip meter I can estimate when to stop for fuel. :)

Any insights would be appreciated..thanks!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

1. The relay is behind the center console vents.

2. Check that the leads to the sender unit are good. You can access the top of the sender unit through an inspection hole in the floor of the luggage area.

3. The part number for the button is 1384775. To replace it you have to take out the cluster which is held in place by 4 screws and is a straightforward job to remove it.

To give you an idea of what you will be looking at have a look at this site. Unfortunately the pictures aren't in order but #5 shows where the button fits on. Our sponsors MyVolvoPartsOnline and VolvoWholesaleParts both list the button. Their adverts at the top of the forum are links.

Bill thanks so much for your reply and info.

A small update on the power window fault. My multimeter and I did some testing and located the problem to be 3 broken wires at the driver door hinge.... looks like time and a lot of opening and closing fatigued the wires until they broke. When I get time I'll splice in some new wire so I can pass inspection. I'm surprised more people don't have this problem with the age of these 240s.

Soldered Two Red wires and a black wire (and a blue that was starting to weaken) wires.... all is well with the windows now, all four work. Thanks for the help I'll update on the fuel gauge issue when I can do some investigation.

Another update. I discovered the fuel gauge was not functioning because the wires had broken off at the sender with a decent amount of corrosion at the site, which also meant the in tank pump was not functional either. The car was running fine so I suppose the main fuel pump was doing all the work? I replaced both sender and in tank pump but without the bung tool it took almost 4 hours from start to finish, dealing with all the corrosion in that area and also the aftermarket sender I received from FCP Groton was wired backwards, not their fault and so glad I caught that. All is well now. Still havent replaced the trip meter reset button :).

Thank you for the update.

When the in-tank pump stops the main pump can do the job but obviously has to work a lot harder, leading to failure. Usually if the tank level falls below 1/4 the main pump can't cope.
