Hey I'm new here,
I have a 2000 S40 with the check engine light on. I had a tech scan the codes and it read I needed a crank position sensor. So it got changed yesterday and the CEL is still on. Now the shift light is blinking and the button isn't pushed in neither. But when I put it in drive and press the acclerator the car bucks real hard and shuts down. It will start back up but in order for me to drive it I have to put it in the lowest gear to go forward. Now in reverse I don't have that issue it works like a champ...LOL.
I'm stuck b/c I don't know what the problem is or could be for it to at like this. Is there a way to reset the computer for the engine and transmission?
Thanks in advance..

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
After the crank position sensor was changed was the fault code erased by the tech? If the fault code is still in the system the brain will think the fault still exists.
Bill.

Those codes relate to Volvo codes AT322, AT323 and AT324 which are incorrect gear ratio in gears 2, 3 and 4 respectively. When these codes are set the gearbox goes into 'limp home' mode which means the transmission only operates in 3rd gear in positions 3 and L, 4th gear in position D and reverse in position R. The shift light blinking is an indication that this has happened.
The codes can be set by a faulty transmission speed sensor signal or a faulty vehicle speed sensor signal. This probably relates to the original problem which the mechanic fixed. Have him erase these codes and run the car to see if they return.

Ok had all codes erased and CEL was off for about 5 minutes then came right back on and the shifter light started blinking again as well. Had the codes read again and I got codes P1618, P0014, P0732, P0733, and P0734. What is it I have to do to get rid of the problem. I have emission coming up soon that I have to pass and I can't pass it with CEL on.
I hope I don't need a new tranny or replace shifter solenoids. I can only drive it in L if I put it in D the car will shake like crazy then cut off. But when I pull off in L it is real sluggish on take off.

P1618 only tells you that a fault code has been set in the transmission. P0014 is the camshaft reset valve and the other codes are still the transmission codes.
What was the original problem with the car and which code did the tech turn up first?
As I stated, your car is now in limp home mode and the driveability problems you have are directly related to that.
Bill.

The original problem was the Idle Stabalizer code P507 came up so I had it replaced. After the idle stabalizer got replaced then a code for the crank position sensor came up.
Now after I got the old code for the crank position sensor erased is when I got the transmission codes what I have sent you.
Now I don't no where to go from here or where would be a good place to start to get the car out of limp home mode.
And Bill thanks for all of your help I'm learning as I go. All of your info has been on point.

I took the car to the volvo dealership to get my codes read for free. Well the tech told me I needed to get my cam seals replaced, my CVVT HUB needed to be cleaned, My coolant Temp sensor also needed replaced. And he said the codes for my tranny he never seen before since the 8yrs he has worked on volvo's.
I really don't think he knew what he was talking about. He didn't understand when I told him my vehicle was in Limp Home Mode. Wow this tech was a joke. But they wanted to charge me $3000.00 to do the work. But they wasn't sure if that will make my CEL cut off..
Now what to do.How many speed sensors sit on the transmission? The parts guy at volvo told me 2. One is called a engine speed sensor and the other is called a vehicle speed sensor.Which one is for the transmission?
