1994 850wagon, Auto-Tranmission will no engage

There is a circlip that retains the (North American) drivers side axle in place and it can be a real BI-itch to get it to seat properly. If either axle pops out of the splines you are going nowhere.

Out of frustration I have used a 2X4 and a small 5lb sledge hammer on the back of the inner CV joint to drive the joint into its home position to the point where it clicks and locks.

I now have the drivers side axle removed. It just came right out of the transmission. The splines looked good but there was some wear right where the cir clip should be. There was no cir clip on the axle. It is locked in position in the transmission. I am trying to locate a new half shaft to replace and see it this transmission will work once new axle is installed. I need to know how I can get the cir clip out of the transmission with out it falling into the transmission. Basically What tool should I try using? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Matt

Thanks for everyones help. I got the new axle installed and the transmission seems to work fine.

The end of the axle where the cir clip is located was sheared off. The last 1/8th of an inch. That piece and the cir clip is missing. I did just purchase this vehicle and I dont believe the owner had a clue this was an issue, he thought the transmission was bad. Well I got the axle installed and turned the wheels in neutral to see if I could feel anything or hear anything, which I did not.
So I have never seen the inside of one of these transmissions. I looks like there is no pan just a drain hole. I was thinking of lifting the car as high as I can in the direction of the Oil fill hole and drain the fluid. I am hoping that the pieces might be sitting on the bottom of the trans and may flow towards the drain hole. I was then going to try a very strong magnet and drag it along the bottom and see if I can get something to show at the drain hole. I have not driven the vehicle over 5 mph and I am really nervous about the pieces possibly inside the transmission. If I dont get any pieces out of the transmission does anybody think if I epoxyied some have duty magnets to the bottom of the transmission that It may catch any pieces and possibly keep them from being moved around in the case. That's exciting, isn't it? A working car for cheap!

The drain plug itself is already a rather strong magnet, but try dragging something along the bottom and listen to see if you hear anything moving around. The clip may have fallen out already.

I think the drain plugs on the auto boxes have the same thread as the magnetic sump drain plugs. I would stick a magnetic tip plug into the transmission to catch any possible shrapnel.
