Transmission not engaging

Post by diesel68 »

I have a V40 with 135 000 miles on it. In the last 4 or 5 days the automatic transmission has been acting up. When I start the car and shift into drive it feels like it is in neutral for a few seconds before it slips into drive. The same thing will happen if I brake hard at a stop sign. Believe it or not, it appears to be worse in the morning when I start out. Perhaps it is related to the car/transmission fluid being cold.

Have you checked fluid level. The part about hard braking and going out of gear is a direct hit on a low fluid gearbox.

I had similar symptoms w/my 01 v70 with an aisin/warner transmission,aw 55/50SN , tok it to the dealer he did a software update on it and it did not help chasrged me for the update but it did not help now since this is my first Volvo it has been a learning expierence.I found the atf 3309 at a local oil dist and did a tranny flush about 3 times waiting about 700-800 miles between ea flush, it would help but not enough I finall replaced the tranny. Now the dealer wanted 4600.00 plus fluid, and taxes.I only paid 5400.00 for the car about 6months prior. Do Not Go to the dealer for their tranny.they would PROBABLY give you 12 mo and 12,000 mi warr.Get intouch w/Transmission planet out of Atlanta and they should be able to help you.I don't have the place to replace a tranny so I was able to find a local guy to the job.The trans from transmission planet delivered here to the house was 1,738.00 and the labor was 450.00 plus tax. saved a little more than half.and the rebuilt tranny came w/2 year unlimited mile warr. Hope this helps and good luck.
