S40 2000 (V) Petrol Fumes On Starting

Post by meta_volante »

Hi there, I got a problem with the old S40  on starting the smell of petrol fumes is terrible, the wife and kids now refuse to get in until I have been around the block to clear it  I am not a mechanic of any sort so any help would be excellent,so here goes, on starting up the smell of fumes, similar to an exhaust gas but more petrolly is very bad around the front and sides of the car,so if it is hot you can't open the window for a while as it would choke you,but after say the first couple of miles the smell disapears, and doesn't come again until the car is started after standing for a while. I have paid to have the old beaut tuned, but they said it wasn't worth the expense as there was nothing wrong  she has only done 25k and has very little signs of wear anywhere, any help welcomed.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply.

My s70 has a similar smell on start up that quickly fades away . Is it a coincidence that my NO reading was just under the limit when I had to have the emission tested for a new plate. howstu

i do not know if it applies to your year, but, there was a fuel rail problem with my v40 that was covered by a service bulletin. the fix was a fuel rail clamp that eliminated a leak. if you have not had this checked, volvo should do it for no cost. mine was done without me asking, at a check up.

your wife and kids are smart not to get in a fuel rich environment....you should be the same. get it checked at a volvo dealer store it should be free, certainly free to ask the service people.
