Thoughts on investing in service agreements

A mid-size luxury crossover SUV, the Volvo XC90 made its debut in 2002 at the Detroit Motor Show. Recognized for its safety, practicality, and comfort, the XC90 is a popular vehicle around the world. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America). P2 platform.

Thoughts on investing in service agreements

Post by trstjohn »

My 03 XC90 T6 is approaching 140K. After 140K most service companies will not allow coverage on most vehicles.

I know the transmission was replaced in my vehicle at least once, from the carfax that I have.

Essentially my question is, is it worth to invest the $2500 on a service contract to possibility cover if the transmission decides to crap out?

That is a good bet but what company and will they be around 6 months from now?
What requirements do they have for maintenance?
Is transmission 100% covered? (except for deductible)

I imagine it would make sense to do it with a company like carchex or warranty direct. While each contract is from a specific vendor, i'd assume if the company went out of business you'd get a comparable plan.

For example, here is one of their "sample" plans" from carchex

they have a A BBB

before we started purchasing the CPO vehicles I always opted for the extra coverage, third party through the dealer, and some of them would refund part of your purchase at the end of the term if you didn't use it. Check with a Volvo dealer, see what they can offer. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

We have two XC90's , my wife's 2007 has a extended warranty on it, and I plan on purchasing the Volvo VIP coverage when that ends or close to the car reaching 100K.

My car, the 03 XC90 T6 was purchased privately and since it's over 100K, i can't purchase the VIP warranty from Volvo.

What are the qualifications to buy VIP coverage from volvo? Can i get it on my used XC90 with 65k on it?

The only qualification is that the car must be under 100K before the contract is purchased.

I haven't purchased VIP coverage on our 2007 yet as it's still covered under the service agreement from when we bought the vehicle. We got that XC90 from a Audi dealership.

Volvo VIP is just a typical 3rd party service agreement that the dealer uses. Each Volvo dealer is different.

Interesting, may have to call them for a quote. Most the quotes ive gotten are $4,000 for an agreement up to 110,00ish miles. That seems REALLY steep to me.

You can definitely get a decent service agreement from Carchex ,for example like $2750.
