Non steptronic -> Steptronic?
Non steptronic -> Steptronic?
So, we're rebuilding the trans in the 01 S60. In the past when I've inquired about used trannies, the shops have said they can install a steptronic when they do it. Being that this is a rebuild, it will just be a new valve body I presume. What's involved in turning it into a step? What parts do I need?

geartronic is a shifter assembly with the extra gate and the associated gearshift module with the sensors for gear lever entering the gate and being moved fore aft. Also the TCM software for the GSM.
NO difference in the transmission. It is all in what the TCM commands to the transmission. TCM already has full control over what gear the transmission is in, it just needs the inputs and software to handle inputs.
I seriously doubt the trans shop can deliver on that promise.

none of the changes have anything to do with the transmission. You replace the shifter assembly inside the car and then download the TCM. The first thing you do is check to see if TCM reload for Geartronic is even available at a volvo dealer or independent shop with VIDA download capability.
Alternate would be the TCM and shifter assembly out of a wrecked S60 2.4T 2001 model. THat may work with no download but if the car ever gets software loading in the future VIDA will stop due to a mismatch in control unit serial number and software version and if the shop continues the car will revert to non-Geartronic.

Right, but my assumption was that the shifter gate comes up through the bottom of the car and is easiest done when the trans is out. Haven't touched the S60 but I've done a swap on an e30. I'm sure it's considerably more complex.
This car may go to a driving event / track school / etc so I'd like some manual control of the trans to protect that fragile valve body.

Hm.
Two salvage yards. One says it's just the shifter assembly, one says it's an entirely different transmission. What would the software flash cost anyways? The gear assembly is $250 at the local yard.
Has anyone done this swap successfully that could relay their experiences?
