01 S40, codes P0500 & P1618, need advice please

Post by jkgantt »

i have a 2001 S40, it is currently giving several codes on a OBD2 scanner

codes:
P0500 (veh speed sensor a malfunction)
P0168 (manu control aux inputs, aux outputs)

Symptoms from car:
-Check Engine Light is on
-Up Arrow on in instrument cluster (transmission arrow?)
-Car's transmission slips randomly when driving it (i don't believe the trans is bad, i think it is jumping in and out of gear because of these codes possibly)
-and last, sometimes it throws a code for the O2 sensor

I need some advice on how to isolate these issues and where to start. I am very mechanically minded, just not that experienced with this VOLVO.... lol

I have to get these issues resolved, so i can get it inspected in North Carolina, so that i can have it registered and legally drive it.

Any advice or suggestions, will be greatly appreciated... also, if this has already been discussed on this forum and you can point me towards that discussion, i would appreciate it.

ABS supplies the VSS but you have no ABS lamp. Is the ABS lamp lit before starting car?
Speedometer works?
P0168 is for diesel fuel temp excessive on Duramax and Cummins as far as I can find.

The trans control module (TCM) is on the floor under center console. Black one is ECM, silver box is TCM. Maybe a connection problem at TCM? Is it possible it was a flood car? (I'm doing wild speculation here......)

i will double check the ABS light tonight (i know for fact, the abs light isn't on after starting it)

The Speedometer works fine, i have had no issues with it.

I will also check out the connections for the TCM tonight. As far as i know, the car has never been flooded, i have seen no signs to indicate it.

The flood comment was just thrown out there in case you knew something like that about the car. I have seen s40/v40's that flooded mildly and had ECM and TCM wetted.

Is the second code p0168 or p1618

the 2nd code is p1618

i will check the connections for the tcm, and even see if i can get inside of it, to check for water damage or corrosion.

1618 is the code for when the check engine light is requested by other control units (tcm).
Checking connector, fuses, transmission connector would be good first investigation.
