AWD Coupling between trans & angle gear box

Post by dannyxc90 »

I am experiencing a typical (so i hear) problem with my xc90. AWD (rear wheels) are not driving.
a local dealer told me about a coupling between the trans / transfer case and the angle gear box that runs dry and is capable of stripping. Got the drive shaft out and the angle gear box removed. NOW for the life of me i can't get the coupling out! the dealer says it should pull right out... i have pulled, pried, and beat with a hammer trying to break it loose so i can put the new one in.
Any suggestions on getting this coupling out???

The cuffs are never easy to pull in my experience. I have always had to use a puller. I have a bearing puller from Snap On that has jaws that can be tightened inward against a bearing and by reversing jaws I can push the jaws outward and get enough grip for puller bolt to push against a drift stuck into RH driveshaft spline.
How bad are the splines on the angle gear?

thanks jimmy, I'll have to get a puller...
The splines on the angle gear seem to be in good shape! i put the new coupler on the angle gear and it seemed solid...
all i need is to get the old coupler out!
