I am working on my 2001 V70 T5to replace both drive shafts and control arms.
The passenger side replacement was quite easy as I could simply pull the drive shaft out once the bearing cover was removed.
The drivers side drive shaft is giving me problems as it won't come out.
Looking at the new part the area where the splines are has a spring clip. I can see the need for it as the passenger side drive shaft is not held in place by a bearing.
So, the question is what is the suggested procedure? Can it be done while I am laying underneath the car.
I have tried to pry between casing and shaft.
Job going on now need help: drivers side drive shaft

They should come out with a good tug but a lot of times, they get stuck on because of rust. When I replaced my driver side, I had to spray PBlaster between the trans and the shaft and then give it a couple of wacks to get the rust to loosen up. Then with a few good tugs, it popped out.

The retaining ring can get off to one side and it will not retract into groove to allow it to come out. push in and turn the shaft 1/4 turn and then pull outward and pry again. If that fails tpush in tuen and pull out and pry again. Repeat this a few times.
It usually works but sometimes there is no easy way to get it out.

Just did both axles on my S60; used a large screwdriver to wedge between transmission and driver-side axle, tried one side, then the other, no go. Then tried two medium-sized screwdrivers, one on either side of the shaft, popped right out with not too much effort.....
Success!
Thanks for all your input.
This is what I did:
wedged two large screwdrivers in the 5 and 8 o'clock positions;
rotated the shaft;
wedged the screwdrivers in again;
used a small hammer to put some force behind it;
then I took a big hammer and hit the shaft close to the transmission let's say in the 11 o'clock position;
then I noticed I could get the screwdrivers in a little bit further;
grabbed a hold of the shaft near the transmission and wiggled it out.
Took about 15 min.
