S80 2001 Leaking antifreeze

Post by lah58 »

Starting leaking antifreeze last summer, did not over heat temp gauge always normal. independent volvo repair shop #1, pressurized, didn't find any leaks. Stopped leaking afterwards. Recently started leaking again, took to shop #1 again, pressurized, couldn't find leak. Continued to leak so took to volvo repair #2, pressurized said reservoir needed replacement, charged too much. Car never over heated during this time, temp gauge always normal. So went back to #1 shop ( been with them for yrs) to replace. they noticed (1st time this happen) antifreeze in car, drivers side under mat. Need heating coil replaced. Replaced heating coil, didn't replace reservoir. Noticed strong smell in car & window fog (after repair made) thought b/c of new heating coil, would resolve soon. Drove car next day(saturday shop closed) less than 30 miles, low coolant indicator on again. Smell still present. Added antifreeze, next day, after car cooled all night, didn't drive car that day. Next day drove car, smell still there, after 20 miles temp gauge reaching hot, indicator reading-stop car engine too hot. (thank goodness @ destination) Contacted shop#1, told to bring car back. Next day after car cooled for over 24hr, added antifreeze, took car to shop (hot engine light on after 30 mins driving to shop). Antifreeze leaking all over. Now have blown head gasket quoting over 2k for repair.
Question: When replacing heating coil could this have affected car so that it leaked antifreeze in a matter of mins, smell & fogging normal, & now gaskets blown?
