2001 S80 will not start

Post by peters417 »

2001 S80 Turbo with 65,000 miles. Recently had lower engine oil leaks repaired, new timing belt and plugs installed. Engine ran good at any speed but at idle would begin to stumble. Daughter was driving and engine stopped and will not re-fire. At garage, find spark is at plugs, have fuel pressure in fuel rail, but have no compression in any cylinder. Could a new belt jump to change valve timing that much? Or a tensioner problem?

Yes, mistakes in the timing belt job could result in out of time and even bent valves.

But I have driven the car for almost 2,000 miles since the repairs were done. How can I visually check timing marks without too much dissassembly?

If you had a garage do the work you might have a fight on your hands. What exactly was repalced? Sudden loss of compression in multiple cylinders like that only really means one thing :(. Coupleed with your mentioning of an idling issues leads me to belive the belt job wasnt done correctly.

"Easiest" way to check timing is remove the starter motor to reveal the plug in the block behind it. Remove the plug, drop a 6" (or thereabouts) 3/8" extension in the hole, turn the motor counterclockwise gently by hand until it stops turning. This is your mark. It is NOT at TDC, this is normal.

That said, the timing can still be wrong even if the marks line up if the VVT was set inccorectly. However, I personally have set the VVT incorrectly and although it ran rough it did not do any damage.

When the engine stopped, did your daughter hear any clanking noise. You will hear that type of noise if something failed in the timing system. You will hear the valve hit the piston.
Besides the timing belt, did you change the water pump?, belt tensioner? idler pulley?
Any of these items can fail and wreck the valves in your cylinder head.
Like the other person said, you can take out your starter and there is a allen type bolt that goes in the side of the engine and you can get to the proper setting for timing ,he explained it well in his post, Take off the top of your timing cover and see if the cam marks are lined up correctly
