Re: Do it yourself ABS module repair.

Post by bigcfromcinci »

Guys,
Car in question is 98 V70 5cyl na...I recently sent my abs unit to Module Masters because my tracs light and ABS light were coming on intermittently, then the longer I let it go it would stay on longer. Then it would stay on pretty much all the time.
So off it went to MM. Well I get it back and the same thing. Both lights stay on all the time.

So, I went to the dealer to have the ABS codes scanned ( 152.00) :x and this is what they came up with:

ABS-214 RR SENSOR
ABS-224 RR SENSOR
ABS-141 EBD PRESSURE

The dealer said I need a new ABS control unil.

I called MM and they don't seem to want to do anything about it. They said it checked out good when it left their shop so it must be good.

What would you guys do?

TIA,
Curtis

I'd double check the large multipin harness and reseat it a few times. Seems awfully odd that you'd have both rear sensors out, but check them anyway to cover your bases. You should be getting between 1040 and 1400 ohms.

They shouldn't put you off like that. The correct thing to do would be for them to look at it or lead you through the steps to determine the problem. Don't sell a product if you aren't going to offer support for it.

This forum is a terrific resource. It also connects us to some amazing folks. I tried the diy fix for the abs and used an oscillating saw to open the case; in doing so I damaged some components on the board. I contacted Matt (mattymoo) and he fixed it quickly and even came to my house and installed it! (he was coming to Kalamazoo and went out of his way to see me!). Now my 98 sandstone pearl xc is on the road! Thank you Matt!

Tah for the awesome guide Lee and all that have commented. Speedo stopped working and idiot lights came on so sicked up a dremel and a butane soldering iron and cracked the module adding some solder to some pins and sealed it back up and now works as designed. I now know how the ABS is meant to work and I don't think it has worked properly in the 2 years I have had the car.
Me = happy camper :D

Thanks heaps because I am another happy dude for this fix.
The fix itself is a little painless, the most pain being from hesitating about doing it. I bought some torx sockets, was not expensive. I did get a diagnosis before that and was at an auto electrician. Was cheaper but did the same as a dealer who would do that same diagnosis and would end up at that same result with codes 0070 and 0080, that mine got, from the computer.
Then I came accross this board and thread while looking for ways to eliminate the culprit.
A mecahnic seperate from this affair advised me that brake fluid would come out if I pulled the ABS module.
Nothing of the sort.
In fact, getting the torxs out was a breeze with a small shitty ratchet. Had the 3" extender but the best thing was the torx socket. Makes it nice and easy. I bought a set up to 15mm at Supercheap ($ 34 NZD)
I took and moved fuze box out of way which was easy as it is just held by clips!
Thing to do is remember that you obviously disconnect the ABS pump electric cluster, which is a smaller plug than the main cluster - so you might forget to put that smaller one back in. I did, at first, and got a negative result about my soldering.
I had to call my bro-in-law who is into soldering to ask him to confirm my soldering attempt. He has a solder sucker so replaced on the power pins new solder.
I Installed and tested without the back case, and goes like a (*^*&%&^&)(& dream.

Thanks heaps to you for making this forum and thread.
Can't thank you enough.

The case, btw, I got into via a nude hacksaw blade in the fingers ie, sawing. I don't know if that is right but seemed the only way to counteract those self-squeezing washer things. I sliced through the round pipe bolt holders - and the washers popped up then out. The case was wierd but well built.

I put it together with silicon gasket RPV and didn't wait for cure, ... but is going well-as three days later.

A happy new guy here. I had to do it twice since I only reflowed pins that were obviously cold. Once I redid all of them it's been working great for a week now.

Thanks again.

Oh since others are posting how they got into the box. I used a serated steak knife as a saw. :) not kidding, I've been using those to cut plastic for a while. Works great and has a nice handle too. :)

Great writeup. When my wife's V70AWD began with Check Engine lights, cruise dying, intermittent pedal feel, I looked to Matthews for the solution. It took me step by step how to analyze this issue. A few hours of searching on eBay, purchasing the proper tool and module, and 10min of labor, my problem was solved and I was back without issue on our AWD wagon! Thank you Matthews for such an informative site!

Trying to see if this is the problem I'm having. Would the turn signals fail at the same time? I have the abs light and I cannot shift without pressing the override button and the speedo will not function. I can't find any mention of other people with the turn signal issue in addition the others.

Aero850T,

I would look to the electrical portion of the ignition switch with your list of problems. The ABS module may be going bad, they all do, but the turn signals aren't compromised by a bad ABS module.
