98 S70 140K miles Fuel Pump?!

Post by heckler »

Hey guys,

Great site. I purchased a higher miles 98 T5 S70 in the fall and love the car to death. I started getting a random issue where the care would sputter and I would lose throttle response. Sometime the car would die. It first happened about 3-4 months ago and really freaked me out. I checked all my fluids and found nothing unusual. When it initially happened I was pulling into a parking lot and it died. No warning just died. So I turned the key on and off a few times... it started up and didn't do it again for roughly a week or 2. The 2nd time it happened I was about 100 miles from my house and it died and started just like last time. On the way back home the vehicle didn't die but lost all throttle response. Turning it on a off resolved the issue and I continue on home. It was very intermittent for the entire period I was experiencing it. Sometimes I'd go weeks without any issue then all a sudden I couldn't go 30 ft without it acting up.

I changed the fuel filter shortly after it gave me a long string of the said issue. After doing that it was fine, I didn't notice any issues for about 2 weeks. Then it began doing it again. When I changed the fuel filter it looked relatively new. No nasty stuff came out of it.

So my question now is... This has to be a failing fuel pump right? Or are there some other things I need to troubleshoot? Appreciate any help guys!

Should also note it has been randomly throwing code:
P0108

Which according to my code read is "Manifold Absolute Pressure -OR- Barometric Pressure Circuit High Input"

Would that code cause no throttle response? I think they're separate issues. I did the "hit-it" method and it cleared the code.

At that mileage it is not a bad idea to replace these 2 items. This way you know you eliminated these 2 common issues:

1. Fuel Relay: $35-40.

2. Fuel Pump.
Don't buy the whole assembly, just buy the Bosch insert $160:
