Front suspension rebuild question

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Front suspension rebuild question

Post by Rick764 »

Hi yazs,
I love your site, The information here is a great help.
I have ordered and received all the parts for the suspension rebuild on my 99 S80 with 175K. I took a bit of time to search for how to's on the web. Found a lot of great info on getting the job done in the privacy of my garage, where I'm learnig to swear in Swedish, while working on this ?#!!&%!! car  I found several references on replacing the bolts and nuts with new and not reusing the "strech bolts " that you remove from such areas as control arms and knuckle to strut connection bolts. Is this realy necessary or are you just expected to spend the extra bucks to do so? When the Lemforder ball joints came I inspected the bolts supplied, found the threads to be somewhat scored or scratched up. Is this the normal appearence of a new strech bolt? I have a great deal of experience working on American and Japaneese cars but this is my first Volvo, and I'm seeing things I'm not used to seeing. I took great pains to order as many parts as I could find by Lemforder, Febi/Blisteen, Sachs and the likes. I was realy dismayed when the Febi parts came in with "made in Tiawan" stamped on the box. I hope the quality of the parts has not been sacrificed. Sorry for the rambling, any information will be greatly appreciated. thanks Rick

Replacing bolts is always safe. Not always necessary. For many of the replace bolts instructions it is because it is a factory applied thread locking compound fastener. Some of those fasteners look coarse due to the spray applied locking compound.

The rebuild is comming along great, taking my time working on it in the evenings. The improvised press I fashoned using the hydraulic press from my enerpac hole punch set is the ticket for replacing control arm bushings and ball joints. I'll post some pics in the near future on this. Thanks to all the forum member's ideas and posts that spawned this idea. :D
Im having trouble finding torque specs. Any one know the settings for the ball joint bolts, axle spindle, and strut mount and strut to wheel hub bolts? thanks in advance Rick

I now this thread is a little old but did anyone happen to have the torque settings for two lower strut mounting bolts and the one that connects to the stabilizer bar link. I'm replacing all the shocks with Koni sports adjustables, using the insert type ones at the front where there is some cutting and drilling of the old shock housings at the front end. It maybe here somewhere already, I have tried searching and feeling quite usless at this point.( my first forum post, please be patient).
