2005 S40 Radio intermittantly silent

Post by randy826 »

Every once in a while, when I start my S40, the radio appears to funtion in all ways, except there is no sound from the speakers. I change to other presets, switch between AM / FM / CD, all to no avail. Sometimes when this happens, the display shows "FM Preset 10", although I have no station set at preset #10. This happens whether the radio was left on or off previously, it doesn't matter what station was selected, which band, or even if CD was on. When I select CD, the display shows track number and time counting. Finally, turning the radio off then back on has no effect.

The only way to get the radio working again is to shut the car off and remove the key from the ignition, then re-insert the key and restart. This problem occurs about 1 out of every 10 starts.

Forgot to mention a couple of things.

1. I took the car to the local Volvo dealer when the radio wasn't working. Unfortunately, I shut the engine off, and when they restarted it to take it to the service bay, the radio was working again. They said there was no diagnostic code to indicate any errors or problems. They also said they would send a message to the company in Sweden and ask for advice. I haven't heard back yet - it's been about a month now.

2. The car has just over 2000 miles on it, and this has been happening since almost day one.

Problem is the ignition switch. New s40 and v50 series have this problem. I got the same problem, after dealer change the switch, prolem solved.

I received a call from the dealer on Friday. He said Volvo sent them a software fix. I took the car in, and he upgraded the software. Haven't had the problem since. Of course, it's only been a couple of days.

Fortunately, I'm already scheduled to drop my car off at the dealer for other service tomorrow. I've printed this string, and I'll give it to the service department. Hopefully they'll fix it!

I'm especially concerned since Volvo has decided to lock multiple functions together centered on the ignition switch and the center console. It appears that the software programming is faulty. Unfortunately, while we are used to rebooting our computers when software locks up, we can't do the same for our cars!

ARE YOU LISTENING, VOLVO/FORD?

It's a good thing I printed this string. The tech came out of the shop declaring that nothing was wrong... then I showed him this string. He shrugged his shoulders - walked back into the shop - and - upgraded the software. Probelm solved.

THANKS!

Glad you got your problem fixed. It's been almost a year now, and I haven't had any problems since. I'm quite happy with my S40. Just had it shipped from Germany to Shererville Indiana, then drove it down to San Antonio, where I'm now stationed. Shipping was easy, and there were no problems.

Thank you for this informative string on 'radio silence'. I have had numerous bouts with the electronic demons in my 2005 S40. First, radio antenna faulty - it was realized that antenna is "tied" (cabled) with rear window defroster - which was shorting out). Secondly, numerous false alarms with car alarm - took it to dealership on several occasions, now that maintenance warranty has expired it was discovered by dealership that a new "box" is needed - $450 for this part! I tried to get Volvo to pick up the tab - because of the numerous, persistent alarm activations at my workplace - Homeland Security HQ - needless to say this has been annoying to security personnel guarding the facility! Unfortunately, according to local customer service reps too much "good will" had been applied to the vehicle in getting the passenger side airbag electronics to function properly - getting this item repaired was evidently a big ticket item for Volvo. Please don't label me as a whiner -I've own(ed) SIX Volvos since 1986 - all with more 100,000 miles on the odometer. The S40 appears to have its' "faults" with electrons - God help us if we encounter catastrophic EMP from solar flares!
