YAHOO!! S80 ABS messages and no re-start fixed

Postby uncletom » Thu Oct 14, 2010 11:16 am
YAHOO!!!!
Been over a year of scratching my head and reading all I could find. My ABS problems finally figured out. If you have all the abs, brake, traction and spedo and tack going down and trouble with re-start without disconnecting the battery for a re-set this is what cured mine. after a year of not hardly ever driving the car I pulled the air box and checked the connections on the ABS for a bad connection. The multi pin plug is almost impossible to mess up and you would think the small 2 wire would be also, but the connection was an open. The plug was pushed all the way in but one lead had an open circuit. after 10 years and the plug not being sealed there was a slight amount of oxidation on the connections. After cleaning the plug as best I could without a very tiny brush, a small amount of dielectric grease I plugged it in and out a few times, re assembled the filter box and put it to the test. Ran one tire on wet grass and other on gravel and what do you know, NO SLIP. and after about two weeks no more messages came back on. After one ABS repair and two other in to test Volvo still insisted I need a new controller. I doubt they would have ever found this problem as it looks so simple and easy to connect. In my opinion the design being a vertical F Male socket and no seal to keep moisture out this is corrosion waiting to happen. Repair takes maybe 30 mins.
Sorry for the new thread but I know there are others on the board with the exact same symptoms.

I have never heard of trying the horn but will try that the next time it happens. One thing that I didn't see in this thread was to have the ignition in position 2 and hold the trip in until it beeps (I assume everyone knows what I trying to say). I always do that and it resets it right away. No need to diconnect the ground from the battery or wait.

Well I am back.
Had so much hope in the repair that I had thought fixed this ongoing problem. After 3 weeks of driving without any problems it seems as if it has all come back as usual.I am thinking I will be going to Volvo and checking on a new CEM and programing. This is about the only thing not tried yet. Will keep on posting.

We have a 2000 s80 2.9 that has ALL of the problems listed in this post. We ultimately had the CEM replaced as well. Fixed it all!

Hey robby91, uncletom, and april--

Could you post all of the error codes as read by the Volvo system that your cars were putting out for this problem?

It likely would help the rest of us immeasurably...

Hi, My name is Jose Mauricio and i'm from Portugal. I Own a S80 2.0T year 2000.

For the past few weeks i've been getting the notorious "brake failure stop asap" message among other anoying messages.
The most problematic is the "brake failure stop asap" wich makes my ABS go off, Speedometer, Gas, among other things.

Today, after reading a few posts on this blog, i went to drive my car and like allways i got the "brake failure stop asap". Just out of curiosity, i blown the horn. IT WORKS!!! I blew the horn like John Cherubini said and the "brake failure stop asap" immediatly disappeard, my ABS started working among with Speedometer and others. I ask this: i love my volvo but what kind of car is this, that you need to blow the horn to get the ABS to work?

I've read lot's of things here, related to the notorious "brake failure stop asap": cleaning the ABS module, replacing the CEM, etc, etc. All of these would got me to spend a lot of euros!!! I guess i'll just blow the horn ocasionally!!!

Anyway...any ideias why blowing the horn fixes the "brake failure stop asap"?

Hello to everyone,

I have the exact same problem. I talked to Vick rocha and before I sent the abs unit to him he said it's not repairable. I went to Volvo to see what's going on with the car. I told them that I heard of a recall for the ETM... They replaced it for free. But the problem is still there . I have check engine lights on, ABS, Brake lights on all the time. From time to time I get the STC light. The car runs good except the fact the odometer is the same since I got it back from Volvo.

Now after two months of hundreds of hours of research I don't know what to do. The guys from two different Volvo shops said I need to replace the abs/ STC unit...only $1,900.00 ..aha good luck with that.

My question is : I found a abs/STC unit for sale.only $300.00. Does the serial number from abs unit have to be the same or it doesn't matter as long as is the same model and year...2001 s80 2.9l??!!

Mechanic has been testing every CAN network component while the car is in the failed position. He says all of the computer codes he is pulling are all pointing to the ETM. He wants to replace the ETM.

The ETM malfunctions, its on the CAN network, it screws up the other systems ABS,SRS, Trans. Then i can't start the car right because the ETM is still functioning poorly. I don't get an ETM message on the dash because of the recall software upgrade i installed. Its not allowing it to register to the dash. But the other systems going offline is.

Does this make sense to anyone else? Sounds logical. My question is, he wants $1,400 to do it? God, its a lot of money. Does that seem legit for ETM replacement pricing? Help.
ITS FREE DONt pay him nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there is a recall from volvo for ETM...i had mine done a couple of months ago....call volvo corporation, register your car with them, have them take your info and then go to any volvo dealership and tell them that the guys from Corporate said that i am eligible for a recall on ETM....they will do it for FREE...two or three hours

the ETM is covered for 10 years, 200,000 miles. You may have to call a dealer and give them your VIN and they can tell you the delivery date.
