02 S40 AM Radio Tuning?

My 2002 Volvo S40 has a weird method for tuning radio stations on AM. Instead of moving the station one number at a time (ex. 839 to 840) when pushing the arrow tuning buttons, the stations jump in 7 number increments (ex. 839 to 846 to 853, etc). Is this correct? I wouldn't think so -- the manual doesn't state it's suppose to work that way. FM stations tune in fine.

Anyone familiar with this problem and how to fix it? It's annoying because I can't tune in stronger stations directly, so I get static on stations that should come in crystal clear.
