Transmission "Hard Engage" from idle at stoplight
Here's one for the forum. My 2001 V70 2.4L T5 seems to run well except when at standstill (normal oper. temp) at stoplight. The engine seems to "kick down" a notch in the 1.2-1.5 rpm range and when I give it a bit of fuel to leave the light I get what I call a "hard engage" otherwise descibed as a slight "clunk". Think of it this way...a muffled kind of worn out U-joint kind of sound/feeling on a mid-70's V-8 Ford. So here's the thing. When I use the automatic-transmission "alternate manual shift" in 1st gear off the light...no problem, it is as smooth as ever and can be. What gives? any ideas out there? Thanks.

The early P2 cars, 2001-, had a feature called stop-neutral which lent itself to shortening a transmission's life.
This should be checked by the Volvo dealer and make sure it is disabled. Only the dealer can do this. While you're there they can tell you what else has been done by dealers since the car was made. It might be best to continue using your method of shifting until it's corrected.

ED and JRL are more than likely correct, even if they are not it is worth your $$ now to prevent spending $$$$$ later. The other possibility is that you have worn torque/ engine mounts. Although, you would expect also a slight clunk when accelerating after coasting. The proper action is to take it to the dealer, they will be more than happy to do the software upgrade and tell you what else is wrong. Just remember that almost anyone can replace the torque mounts, so there is no need to have the dealer do it for you.
