Hello,
I just purchased a 2000 V70XC with 13k miles it been driven on occasion by the elderly gent but he spent more on batteries then I'd say any other maintenance outside oil changes at the dealer. I want to flush out all the fluids and change any filters as time is just as important as miles and although he changed the oil. A specialist shop Exclusively in SF says the upper mount is forming a crack and I have a bad designed bevel gear vent that is weeping a bit of oil. They also said to consider a timing belt due to the age but mentioned he would need to inspect it further as he didn't pull the cover off and pre-purchase inspection didn't allow time for that for their special rate.
Volvo's has very conflicting oil spec information, their web site says the same as owners manual.
ONLINE VOLVO MANUAL
Quality: AW4: ATF Dexron III and Mercon.
AW5: Only Volvo gearbox oil (1161540-8). Do not mix with other oils.
So what is AW5? As this calls for the JWS3309 spec oil and what is AW4 that takes regular trans oil?
Also what engine oil do these like there is a broad overlapping scale in the owners manual? Here in the SF bay the weather has been crazy dropping to record lows this winter while the other year we saw 117 F during the summer. I would like to run diesel oil as the additive pkg is better but the viscosities are not as numerous. I'm looking at 10w/30 and 5w/40 as shown in the owners manual. Why is the 10w/30 grayed out there?
I've picked up some Shell Rotello T5 10w/30 semi-syn and T6 5w/40 full syn possibly thinking Brad Penn oil. Either way I need to make a decision and return what I don't use.
Lastly no spec is listed for the rear diff?
Any help guys would be very much appreciated this is my first Volvo!
Parts just purchased from IPD
Oil filter
Oil wrench
Volvo spark plugs
Carbon pollen filter
Fuel filter
Air filter
Headlight wiper blades
Variable wiper relay
Trans flush kit
Washer filter
Magnetic drain plug + seal
Oil cap seal
Rear bumpstop retainer clips
I've sourced these elsewhere
Piaa si-tech wiper blades same as valeo but silcone
Motul Rf600 brake fluid I also have some cheap dot4 to do the flush with
Mobile JWS3309 trans oil 12qts.
Just bought a V70XC with 13k miles what does it need??

Wow! That is probably the lowest-mileage 2000 XC left in the States!
The 2000 XC does not require trans fluid that meets JWS3309. Regular Dex III is fine, but I highly recommend a synthetic fluid. Mobil 1 Synthetic has been great with me and many others.
You should replace the timing belt on this car. I'm pretty sure the tensioner and all that is fine with such low miles, but I bet the timing belt is deteriorating due to old age. PLEASE replace it before it ruins such an awesome low-miles engine. =(

Ditto the timing belt, as well as a serpentine belt; probably no need to worry about the pulleys and tensioners and water pump.
Note; #1, if the timing belt fails while it's running, it'll cost you a cylinder head rebuild, and #2, if the serpentine belt snaps off, there's a chance it could be sucked up into the timing area, see problem #1.
13K??!!! WOW!!!

WOW
If you want to PM me, I have experience with very low mileage Volvos and Gen 1s
I found my 2000 V70R nearly two years ago with 20K on it
GREAT FIND, if you want to sell it PLEASE contact me
Anyhow.
Change ALL fluids Change/renew every single thing that is wet in that car.
Your AC may not work, hopefully you will just need a charge but these evaporators go bad over time
Change the T belt and water pump for time.
Check all vacuum lnes and water hoses for rot
(I would change the water hoses when you flush the radiator)
Clean the bevel gear change the fluid and monitor the "drips" If it just weeps, you're OK for a while
Good luck and please post some pictures.
Also please post some pictures on www.V70XC.com

Oh, also:
There's a second filter for the rear washer, under the tailgate floorboards.
Since you're being so thorough, you may want to do steering fluid; double check your manual but mine says Dex3.
Did I say WOW?
Note also, there's probably some drying in the various rubber wear parts. Put a few more K on it, make sure to get some "spirited driving" in there, and then have your mechanic eyeball it good again. It may shake loose a strut bushing, or sway bar end links, or somesuch like that.
Anyone think he ought to preemptively replace the thermostat and ECT at that kind of sitting-still age, since a flush is being done anyway? It'd be about another $65 in parts to do so. Since you have the system open... Ah yes, someone said hoses, whih makes the tstat and ECT a no-brainer.
I'm told that tire pressure and alignment are critical for the life of your bevel gear. I've never had one myself.

Wow, what an awesome find! I've always wondered what my car would have been like to drive new.
A 2000 uses Pentosin synthetic power steering fluid and just regular Dex-III transmission fluid. The Mobil helps a lot on a higher-mileage transmission, but it is expensive.
Oil - synthetic is the way to go with so few miles. The 5-cylinder engine runs much smoother on a synthetic oil. And as for coolant, use only Volvo coolant or a certified HOAT coolant (I use Zerex G-05; you can find it at Napa Auto Parts).

Great find. There is a updated vent piece for the bevel gear but it is not a guarantee that it will not have oil weepage after the new one is fitted. If they are talking about seam leak on bevel gear, there is a repair procedure for resealing that that is relatively new.
The rear axle takes GL-5 oil that doesn't have limited slip additive in it (spec for that oil is in the pocket data book). It is out there but you may have to look around. Some diff oils say they are OK for lmtd slip and others will have text indicating they already have the friction modifier for lmtd slip.
The rear diff has the mechanical auto locker and the apply action works more effectively WITHOUT the limited slip additive. Not an issue of damage for wrong oil, just may not engage when/as it should.
The #1 precaution is too keep the smallest diameter tires on rear. The viscous coupler system has forgiveness for rear speed being faster (smaller tire goes a few revs more per mile) via a one-way clutch it contains. It is VERY unforgiving for the rear underspeeding the front when the larger diameter tires are on rear.

Jimmy57 on the diff oil GL-5 which weight of oil is it? Straight weight multigrade? The manual on pg134 doesn't list the diff... I still have some Swepco 203 moly oil I could possibly use.
I had the same problem with Benz previous and it was very difficult to discover what oil they use as they only listed a P/N and the bottle at the dealer did not list the weight. I ended up discovering it was made by Fuch and once I cross referenced it I was able to buy from a distributor the same oil with the benz label and price and an oil grade and could then switch to the oil of my choosing.

jblackburn do you know if it is the synthetic or mineral based Pentosin for the power steering?
They have 3 types:
7.1 white with green writing
202 silver with blue writing
11s green with white writing
On the coolant agreed I've always used factory however I have some Motul inugel optimal the specs are here http://www.motorspotstore.com/motulcoolants.html will this work? I have a liter of it sitting around..
Also no word out of oil??? Can chime in I have both 10w/30 and 5w40 in my garage about 8gallons of each I can swap it out if need be with my parts guy thats not an issue I have to do it with the 3309 trans oil now anyways.
