Odometer repair mechanic in NYC area

I need to find a Volvo mechanic that will repair my 1997 850 odometer that is not working. I live in Westchester County just north of New York City. There are a few websites that show me how to do it myself, but I am concerned it will take too much time and I may not do it correctly. Thanks.

Hi, I don't have a mechanic to recommend, but I can tell you what I did a couple of years ago which worked out well. I happened upon a non-volvo mechanic who specialized in electrical aspects of car repair. He rented a bay from a mechanic/used car lot in Queens, NY. I told him about MVS and the repair data base. He looked it up on his laptop in my presence and agreed he would remove the cluster and replace the gear according to the excellent photo directions on this website. I purchased the gear from the particular advertiser on MVS. It cost $25.00 at that time. I brought the gear and ultimately $140.00 to him. He kept his laptop next to him, followed the step by step directions and I'm still pleased with the results. If I weren't absolutely sure I'd drop more than one of the many small screws, I would have done it myself. (probably not, really) Actually, if you look at the directions, It's not complicated, just tedious and precise. I think most decent mechanics, even if non-Volvo could follow the photo directions easily. Just a suggestion. It worked for me. Good luck.

If you have another car, I'd recommend you do it yourself, save that cash for the holidays! I did it myself, just following the directions, and it did not take long nor was it difficult.

I finally got around to fixing my odometer last week end after I had bought that $25 gear a year ago. It took me about 3 hours, (with a short dinner break).
As others have said, you too can do it. You have to have patience and confidence.
Although the web site great write-up shows you are able to remove the odometer assy by opening the dash half way, I found it a real challenge to get the unit out that way. I would recommend that you remove the whole thing, which is easy to do. A procedure exists (of course) on this site showing you how to do that.
Once you disconnect the connectors, pull the unit out, make sure you do not damage the electronics when you open and put it back together.
