Final Drive\Differential Oil ('99 S80 T6)
Is this shared with the tranny? I looked around in VADIS and it doesnt seem to be covered. If it does use separate oil I'd like to change it.....any ideas?

Hope I dont make a fool of myself, but does a front wheel drive car have a differntial? I dont think so. Certainly there is not a pumpkin/rear differential. On Fwd I think it is all one "transaxle" (the two front drive axles and the transmission). If so I think its all transmission fluid. I think AWD would have a differential, but I dont think they made AWD S80s in 1999.

I guess it depends on how pedantic you want to be. Yes its a transaxle, but it still contains the final drive/differential. Having no differential on driven wheels is generally bad news. On the V70 (also transaxle) there is a separate oil used for the final drive. Gear oil. Doesnt seem to be the case with the 4T65E-GT in the '99 S80 though, I think the transmission fluid on my passenger side driveshaft confirms that......

V70 shares ATF also. Only AWD have a gearbox with separate oil, the angle gear.

I have had several AW 50-42's apart and they have no separate compartment. The mid-drum with planetaries in it had a helical gear that contact helical gear on diff unit.
I recall some early (not volvo) transaxles with separate final drives on transverse engine cars and many of the VW/Audi with fore-aft mounted engines that have diff in walled off housing.
The 90 degree hypoid gears need real gear oil due to their wiping contact but helicals are far less abusive to oil.
