slippery residue on floor mat.

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

slippery residue on floor mat.

Post by sgray05 »

I have a 2000 Volvo s80 which has developed a wet slippery residue area on the driver's side floor mat. It seems to be just under the pedals. It recently has seemed to get worse. It does not seem to have a scent. Does anyone know what this might be and is it something that I could fix myself? In addition to this I have frequently been getting notifications that my coolant level is low (more so than I think I should be) and I proceed to fill it up. Could this be what is leaking onto the mat?
Thanks.

Sounds like you have figured it out. It seems your heater core is leaking.

Thanks jimmy,

Is this something that I could possibly fix myself?

I have also come across posts which discuss O-rings with similar symptoms. Not sure what the O-rings are, or if this a possible diagnosis for my problem? (this sounds like a much cheaper problem to have).

Thanks

I have not changed one on a P2 but the task looks to be not too hard. The pipes are on left and the heater core looked to insert from that side. The O rings leaking would be on that side visible with under dash panel removed and the carpet pulled down from the tunnel.

I replaced my heater core on my 99 S80 and the only way to do it is to pull the dash-big job! if you just replace the o-rings you can do it if you can stand on your head :). It isn't impossible but it's not easy. They do fail after a few years. The spring clips are tough to get out and in so buy those also. Unless you are mechanical it may be best to take it to a dealer.

Thanks, My memory was correct on the orientation. I had the dash out and saw the heater core layout and thought it would clear things for it to slide out.

I changed the o rings on my heater core two weeks ago. Everything came apart easly but what a pain to get those clips back in. Not a good DIY project if you have a bad back.
