Various electrical issue....in one go !

Post by booobooo »

Hello all fellow Volvo fans

I wondering if there is any assistance out there (or if anyone has these issues...and resolved them !)

All these issues are currently still ongoing...and may or may not be related.

I have a "buzzing" when I turn the ignition off. It appears to be coming from the middle cosole.

The radio/cassette/cd player display is not illuminated. Although it does work. (guess work needed to see which track is playing !)

The full beam lights are not engaging (when the paddle is pulled, and the lights are "on", not in daylight mode). However, when they are "on" and/or in daylight mode, the paddle can be pulled and the full beam does "flash".

The dashboard LED display (mileometer, outside temp OBC display) is not illuminated.

The dashboard (speedometer) illumination, is delayed on start up, then comes on as normal.

The fog lights (front and rear) can not be turned on (when the correct headlight setting is engaged).

The central locking sytem "buzz's" when locking or unlocking (and on opening and closing the door). This is done now by the key, as the remote no longer works ! (this may be due to the remote battery running out...although this may not be the case)

Also, today the front headlamp buld has blown. I noticed, on the unilluminated Onboard Computer display, it says "multiple bulbs" are out. These appear to be a headlamp, a rear light and one licence plate light.

I am hoping that previously, having missed the licence plate bulb being out previously (at the time I noticed the "buzzing" noise behind the middle console) that this has caused unbalanced electrical loads on the various circuits...and resulted in these various problems.

The car itself is perfect. And I use it around Europe. Once fully loaded ...as in FULLY loaded...on a non stop run across Spain.
As a work horse, she is fine, as a family car doing the shopping trips, she is also find...apart from the above faults !!!!
And a slight oil leak previously, probably due to overfilling !!

Kind Regards, ....and many thanks in advance

David

It's not perfect, you have a ton of issues
I think the major one is you probably need a new DIM (dash cluster) and will sove 75% of the problems.
If the high beams do not turn on when the switch is set at 12:00 I think you will need a new switch
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Would a new DIM min the old DIM is "dead" ? The informtion displayed, but not illuminated is correct, so the chip must be working, or am I mising something with regard malfunctions of DIM's ?

And it seems to have all come at once, so to speak. The cassette/Radio/CD are not related to the DIM ?

I was thinking is there an issue with a broader circiut or an eletrical load somewhere ?

How old is the battery in your car? It seems that as we add more and more electronics to cars the more sensitive they are to battery health. Get the battery checked, or if it is more than a few years old have it replaced.

The battery was replaced March 2009, so just two years old. I will check the battery again, but all seems to be good there.

I was thinking maybe a relay somewhere ? But where ?? And how to check this ?

no, not as simple as a relay.

DIM(instrument clusters) tend to fail in these early model years and are expensive to replace at the dealer. Your best bet is to remove your DIM and write down the part number on the back of it.

Get a replacement DIM from the wreck yard with the same PN and you'll be good. You have to match the the PN or it won't work.

The buzzing sound from the centre console may just be the temperature sensor trying to get a valid recording. Your issues with the light may just be that the headlight was faulty. Try replacing the headlight and see if these issues persist.

I'll investigate the temp sensor, didnt really think of that.

And as for the DIM dash cluster, kooks like a visit ti the scrapyard ! But I thought, and having read several posts concerning the dash cluster, that if it failed, it tends to go blank (lights and dials failure). with mine, all the dials work and the infomation displayed in the dialogue boxes (mileometer, temp, OBC info) is all correct. It is that I just can not see the dialogue boxes properly as they are not illuminated !

With the door lock buzzzing (and this brings it back to a possible DIM failure), are they in some way "related" to that same "circuit" ! Sounds a bit bizarre, but thinl I read that somewhere !

Good Day folks,

'03 S60 2.4T; I was experiencing issues with the instrument cluster starting with the clock running uncontrolably, then the radio would change station without me touching it. Now the cluster has gone completely dark and only lights up occasionally upon starting and only stays lit for a couple of minutes. I have had it checked by a dealer and they indicate that the Driver Information Module needs to be replaced at an estimated cost of 1450.00 USD.
I have 2 questions. Is the "DIM" the same as the "Instrument Cluster"? I ask this because I can not find a DIM on line when looking for discount or used parts. Second, I have found pricing for Insturment Clusters to go from 100.00 USD to 835.00 USD. Can anyone tell me what to look for in order to be sure I'm getting the proper part?

Yes, DIM= instrument clusters.

As I mentioned before, DO NOT BE TEMPTED to buy a cheap used unit, most of them won't work. They won't be recognized by the CEM.

Your best bet is a used DIM from the same model year and the same part number as the one on the back of your DIM.
