1994 850 small coolant leak, passenger side, under pulleys

Post by Lars »

I'm assuming it's the water pump leaking a little bit? I've looked in, on, and around every hose and cannot find a drop anywhere. I've checked the coolant resevoir and hoses, no leaks. I've felt around the thermostat too and can't find any liquid. The coolant drips off the undercarriage of the car just below the pulleys/belt area. I've looked the best I can there too and can't find the culprit.
Do the pump housings leak, or is it more like a pulley/shaft seal, which is what happened to the water pump on my old Saab 900?
Any help greatly appreciated!

1. leaky cooling system hose

2. leaky plastic coolant overflow resevoir

3. water pump failing

When mine started to fail it started there. I let it go a long time by refilling the resevoir a lot but eventually it went all the way. Was lucky to get to my local rip-off gas station before having to shut her down to prevent engine damage.

listed least to most cost (well not sure about 1. or 2. never did myself) station did 3. and it cost plenty but not much choice short of towing it around and it was winter and no place inside at home to try and do myself and middle of the work week. Of course they got me for the classic "might as well due timing belt while we got it apart."

P.S. Don't know if using recommended "Volvo" brand coolant is still (or ever was) an issue. You should confirm that if you do WP replacement yourself.

Edited to add: since transverse mounted engine, no GD room in there to work so it won't be an easy job.
