removing engine from tranny

Post by thetrustywrench »

I have a 93"- 940 wagon. A novice I am....So, I opted to remove the engine in order to replace the oil pan.( What i did not know was this car is from the east coast originally.)
I removed the engine...out came the torque converter along with the engine and the tranny fell just not all the way. Apparently one bracket was missing, which was over seen. ATF leaked out, i got a jack under it and stopped leaking. That was a natural occurrence for the leakage, Right?
The next Question is will the torque converter go back into place and will thee alignment be ok? Is there something i should look for?
This became a bigger project than i expected for my skill level...Please Help! and Thank you in advance for any feed back.

The toque converter was supposed to be released by removing the bolts that attach it to the flywheel. You mentioned East Coast so I figure maybe you took out the bolts but it had rusted on.

At this point separate the torque converter from the flywheel and inspect the seal on the transmission. If damaged or old then replace it. Dump the old fluid out of the torque converter and put it back on the trans once the seal is lubricated with trans fluid.

Make sure the toque converter fully seats back into the trans . Once it is in you should not feel any discernible play . I would drain the trans and change the filter while I was there. Make sure to have enough trans fluid to put in before starting engine. Remember you are filling the torque converter again. After changing filter I would put in just under the full amount the trans takes and then run it for a minute and check the level.

I have seen this problem before and although many seals have been destroyed the trans is almost always ok unless the shaft of the torque converter got scratched and can no longer be sealed properly. If so - replace torque converter.

Make sure to have a good service manual to help guide you on torque values and how far the torque converter goes in etc.

The insertion depth of TC is critical and not too easy to feel.
Measure the projection of flywheel above the back engine black face, the surface that tousches transmission face.
This doesn't have to be a precision to the thousandth of an inch measurement but should be accurate to 1/32".
Now measure the depth of the torque converter boss where the bolt holes are located for TC to bolt to flywheel.
The TC MUST be as deep or a a little deeper than the projection of the flywheel you measured.
Support the TC and rotate it back and forth and push inwards at the same time. It will go in in 3 stages, input shaft, stator, and oil pump drive. The oil pump is usually what acts as the stop. TC will go in deeper than flywheel sticks up off back of engine. When you put engine in the TC will, and must, turn freely. If it doesn't then it is binding because it didn't get aligned with all the parts it must fit into.
