I've searched both the repair database and forum posts for any reference to replacing the parking brake shoes and hardware. I recently performed a front and rear rotor and pad job. When I removed both the rear rotors, the brake material just fell off the shoe. I figured these are the original shoes and after 12 years the bond that holds the brake pad to the shoe just gave up. I am now without a working parking brake.
If anyone has the instruction on how to perform this maintenance, it would be very appreciated.

To emk:
Did you have any symptoms that the shoe material had separated from the shoes? Would have thought that if they were just lying there loose, they would have tended to rub on the drum and would have produced a lot of heat...

In hindsight there may have been a tell... Prior to the brake job, there would be a scrub/rub/light squeal kinda sound coming from the rear wheels when I would drive off after releasing the hand brake. Like the pad was still engaged even after the lever was released.
My advice, if you are going to change your rear rotors for a car over 10 years old, purchase the parking brake shoes/hardware kit to save yourself a headache later and do it all in one swail foop

I forgot to mention that there's a good chance that the pads were holding on by a thread, and only came completely loose after my repeated bashing the old rotor to get it off the axle

I've got an '03 S80 that occasionally would make a loud clank when going from reverse to forward backing out of the driveway like something was releasing. Thought that I might need rear pads so pulled a rear wheel but the pads looked great. In turning the rotor without the caliper and pads on, I noticed a grinding noise and some occasional slight resistence so I pulled the rotor to find that the emergency shoe pads had delaminated. Looks like an old drum set up.
Can anyone tell me if I really need to release the tension on the parking brake cable prior to replacing the shoes?

If you don't release the handbrake adjuster you probably won't be able to get the drum over the new shoes.
