Trans Fluid

Post by beefmaster »

I purchased my '02 v70T5 back in November of 2010. I bought it knowing that the transmission had just be reworked, meaning tranny flush and a valve body. The fluid used was a Wolfs Head Synthetic CVT oil which is 3309 compatible. The valve body is a Sonic Automotive unit. The car drove and rode fine however it did display the typical shift flair from time to time. However 5 months later we are now experiencing some more annoying issues. I have replaced the B4 servo with the IPD unit and took the car to the local Volvo dealership last weekend and had the latest transmission program loaded in. I was wondering if anyone is fimiliar with the Wolfs Head brand tranny fluid or the Sonic Auto valve bodies. Could either of these be a cause of my problem?

REALLY wrong fluid
REALLY wrong valve body

Why the hell would anyone not use an OEM Aisin Warner valve body????????? and not use the correct Mobil 3309, Toyota Typs IV (3309), or Volvo labled 3309.....instead of El Cheapo Wolf's Head!!!!

A penny saved becomes many, MANY dollars BURNED
Of course you did not mention your mileage, You can't just install a valve body in a high mileage and expect the tranny to last very long.

THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REBUILT
Clutch packs, gaslkets etc.

I'm having good service and no problems with the Wolf's Head fluid. I did a full flush at 180,000 mi. with no ill effect.
Dexron was the spec fluid for that trans originally. The Wolfs Head is synthetic and the same price as Dexron.
There's no need for $7/qt fluid in your case.

Sorry, the mileage is 132k. I have topped the fluid level off with the Wolfs Head but I intended to do a full flush with the Mobile. The tranny has had less than 7k miles since the rebuild/rework. So no one else has used the Sonic Automotive valve body? I made it a point to get the guy I bought the car from to include a years warrenty on the transmission, his wife is not to happy but mine sure is. The tranny is not slipping it just has the shift flare from 2 to 3 and slowing back down to 2, and a hard hesitation from stop to 1 if sitting in traffic or a rolling stop but only when warmed up. Fluid level and color are good. Sound salvageable?

I read the sig line instead of the description at the lead in. My mistake on the DEX spec.

Ok, so I go to the local A.Z. store and they have a Mobil Synth. ATF. It does not say '3309' on the front of the bottle however it does say... Volvo 97340, JWS 3309 and Toyota T-III and T IV in the label description on the back. Is this what I need to be looking for or is it more specific to the 3309 designation?

Mobil 1 makes a 3309 fluid and Toyota T-IV fluid is a proven fluid for these transmissions as well. I use the Toyota fluid because it is cheap and is readily available. I guess my attitude about the fluid is "if it ain't broke don't fix it". I know alot of fluids on the market now claim JWS 3309 compatibility and they are probably fine, but there is a little more of an unknown factor with them. I guess it all boils down to how much trust you have in the manufacturer and their designations as to which way you go.

What are your garage shifts like? Is P to D or P to R smooth or does it jump into gear. Did the dealer remove the Slip neutral function with software (separate software)? I am not 100% sure if the 02's still had the SN function though. The reason the valve bodies were replaced in these early AW's was the position of the valves was not ideal and were rotated 180 to keep fluid at the solenoids. I doubt some aftermarket replacement would address that issue. I always use BG universal synthetic trans fluid and it seems not to break down as fast as the factory stuff. If anyone would like another alternative.
