Check engine light...please advise
Check engine light...please advise
I am interested in purchasing a 2005 V70 R but when I pull the E brake up while car was is in park, the check engine light comes on as well. I am not a mechanic so I can't hook it up to a diagnostic tester. I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge as to what this may be so that I have more research on this before my purchase. Thank you in advance.

Nope
You or the owner needs to go to Volvo, pull up the brake and read the code
You sure it doesn't say brake on?

There has to be an internal fault in the DIM/instrament panel. When the brake lamp is lit it lights the Check engine light. That is the only thing it could be.

Agreed. According to the wiring diagram, the parking brake switch (3/47) directly connects to the DIM. If the CEL is coming on exactly when the parking brake is applied, the DIM should be replaced and reloaded. You don't know what else is wrong, so it is difficult to say that it would 'fine' otherwise; there is a very outside chance that the CEL is being lit in response to a condition that is caused by faulty signaling on the CAN bus with either the CEM or the ECM. Do get a prepurchase inspection at a Volvo dealer, or an indy shop with VIDA. If it is the DIM, and it likely is, either have the seller fix it, or reduce the price by the repair cost (new DIM for a 2005 V70R [part 8602897], SW reload [part 9438293], and 2 hours' dealer time probably runs ~$1,200).voltech1 wrote:There has to be an internal fault in the DIM/instrament panel. Thank you all for your responses, we are in LOVE with this car and my husband has been researching this particular model 2005 V70 R for quite some time and we have not found many for sale as it seems like they are few and far between. We have a deposit holding the car until they can check it out themselves because they had not "noticed this" but we went through it VERY thoroughly. I am just trying to get some information before they come back with their response as we don't want to be blind sided if they tell us its nothing and they fixed it and then have it happen after the 30 warranty it gone. Now that I have a little more info, I have some knowledge as to cost/problem (most likely). We hope to have more of a part in this volvo community soon...if all works out
