So are you saying take out the flame trap permanently? Is that bad? Maybe a more thorough response would help. Thanks

The flame trap was not part of the turbo systems- many have removed the flame trap off the NA (normally aspirated) engines with no ill effect.
I have had the flame trap removed since 60K and now have 125K miles. I did it at the recommendation of a Volvo cert mechanic.

Turbo and NA 850's built in the second half of '96 and beyond as well as the S70 got rid of the flame trap. Even VADIS recommends not replacing it, but tossing it. It was an eroneous design that just clogged up and ultimately caused positive pressure and blow rear main gaskets.

What was the purpose of the flame trap?
I am an Australian with a 1996 Volvo. Can someone please tell me how to check if it was made after or before flame traps were not put into these cars any more.

Your 96 850 does have a flame trap, its purpose had something to do with a backfire that never really happends that is why it was no long used in the 98 s70's

I contacted Volvo customer service Australia and they say Volvo have recommended taking the flame trap out for last 3 years now but a specialist Volvo mechanic said to leave it in. He said it was put there for a reason and even though the flame trap is not in the S70 the S70 has a different breathing mechanism and so it can not be assumed it is ok to leave it out.
Is there any reasons at all to leave it in or is this specialist Volvo mechanic wrong?
Could he have an interest in me leaving it in to make more money from servicing the car?
