+1 to the large dog. Living within leash range is sufficient. Large cats are also up to the job.
+1 to the surveillance camera pointed at the vehicle.
Finally: comprehensive insurance. Fire/theft/glass is cheap enough.
The Glock, if you choose to go that route, should be on your hip, not in the car. This won't be very useful without the surveillance system, consisting of large dog and/or factory alarm and/or surveillance camera.
