Awesome write up! My 99 S80T6 just died. Lost compression on two cylinders. Zero compression, so I figure valve problem. I'm a back yard type mechanic. Can this job be tackled by the likes of this poor sole? Is there a direct write up of what is required? What would a job like this cost if it is sent to a shop?

Not sure to be honest. I paid about $160 to get the head pressure tested, cleaned and surfaced. The rest was DIY. I would say $1500 would be on the cheap side for a shop. Lot of stuff to disconnect before the head comes off.

I called a shop today. If I take the head off he'll rebuild it for about $500. When the garage gets cleaned up I may tackle this with the help of this write up.

Check out http://www.cylinder-heads.com
You will have the head when you are taking your old one off so you can reassemble the day you take it apart. The cams will be align bored and the work is done by specialists.

Well the Head is off. Like in the pics mine has a lot of carbon build up. Nothing noticeable visibly. Now I have to decide to speed money on the block or finish taking out the old engine and replace it with the used one. Hmmm

Well, I have 2 exhaust valves that are bad in different cylinders. I'll get a quote on this and decide to either put in the used engine or just rebuild the Head. Anybody have anything to say about Clearwater Cylinder Head Inc. I can get a rebuilt head from them for $450. I'm more familiar with shops here in CT.

How did you get the engine block so clean??
