Remember 75F and 85F aren't squat compared to normal operating temperature.
I was thinking the Mobil 1 0W-30, or really any of the 0W-? series.
It could entirely be that I'm barking up the wrong tree as far as the turbo noise.
Do check the steering reservoir, though. Air will make them wail like a cat stuck in a basement. It's DexIII ATF.

Checked the PS reservoir level - normal, no air bubbles. The whining, however, is stronger (with a stethoscope) at the tubing (the one with a "J" metal bend at the end) about 8-9 inches away from the pump. Could the rack and pinion cause such noise? Thanks.

Well, the PS completely checked, bled and tested. The car still makes the same noise as before, even without serp. belt. I thought that, because I hear the sound at the PS pump the most( with a stethoscope), that was a problem, but it is not. It whines for about 2 min.(while driving) and during that time the moan comes on,first at moderate pitch, then the pitch goes higher and higher and then abruptly stops. All that moan happens within about 20 sec. Even though I hear the sound with steth. mostly at the PS pump-thermostat-front inlet cam bearing area,I can not believe it is a bearing, the do not moan- they knock, screech etc.,but not moan. Unless I am wrong... Any other ideas? Thanks.

Is there any way to stop turbocharger temporary from the spinning on the idle? I hear the noise, althouth not as loud, even at 900 RPM.jblackburn wrote:Does it happen at idle, or only as you're driving along and the RPMs pick up a bit? The turbochargers whine on cold starts for about 2 minutes before shutting up. Not necessarily a cause for concern; just something they do.

So, did not get reply for the last post, I guess it is not possible to do, but how, then, eliminate suspicion that turbocharger and not anything else is making that noise when it does not take oil, does not leak or smoke and performes normally. I found an old thread about whining noise with many frustrated replies and nobody came up with a solution. They called it "Ghostly moan". Thanks.

You can't stop the turbo from spinning. I mean, you could probably jam something in it, but I wouldn't do that. There's a lot of force behind the blades in there.
Make a stethoscope! Pull off the heat shield to the turbo and put a piece of pipe to it and then to your ear.
The "ghostly moan", if it's referring to the noise from a turbo, is just something they all do. Maybe the bearings used in them don't like being cold.

Thanks for the reply, Justin, done that many times over, my ears are hurting from the stethoscope, but I do not hear anything there, only inside with a closed windows and at around 2000RPM - on the idle or while driving.Separately from the whine (I have already gave up on that) this moan does not change in pitch betwwen 1700 and 2000 RPM- just getting louder at 2000 vs 1700. Is it possible that exaust somehow creates such sound? As I mentioned before, the car is only 42k, with a lot of short trips around, hence condensation and internal rustout ? Thanks.jblackburn wrote:You can't stop the turbo from spinning. I mean, you could probably jam something in it, but I wouldn't do that. There's a lot of force behind the blades in there.

Hello again, 870 hits later. Should I assume that 800 + cars are doing the same thing or is it just members brousing? Short update: transmission have been completely checked-OK,noise DOES NOT come from the turbocharger , bearings are within norm.specs, oil pressure to the turbocharger-OK, drain line -clear,engine oil sump pump- no cavitation, O-ring-OK, new everything under the plastic timing cover, belt, tentioner, idler, water pump, still moans on cold start without serp. belt and with air pump off. Should I get over it like everybody else? I would rather have it fixed. I have rebuilt quite a few engines myself (never 5c Volvo),but never heard anything like that. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Is it possible that transmission oil pump makes that noise? I hear the whine on the Neutral as well (1500-2000 RPM). I understand that this is the only one component turning over on Neutral, unless I am wrong. If so, what is involved in replacing it? Thanks.JRL wrote:Could be the tranny
I've have had some that whine for a few minutes then go away when hot

Finally, I have located where the noise is coming from. With a good stethoscope,it is coming exactly from the upper radiator rubber hose 2" away from the thermostat housing. I am not kidding, it is true. Just do not know what else to replace. No other part within entire engine compartment makes that noise.Moving stethoscope away to the close by components reveals nothing. (timing gear cover, front cams bearings, etc). It is whining ONLY at the place I describe. BTW, the water pump is brand new, Aisin.Any thoughts? Thanks.
P.S. As I mentioned before, with a serp. belt and SAS pump off.
