can you clean the pcv system ?
i have run out of money as far as fixing my car goes for now , but i really need to do the pcv system i will take pics of the engine bay tomorrow its probably the worst condition anyone has ever seen. I was wondering if there is anyway to clean the pcv system without spending more then $20 . I need basicly a quick fix for a lil while I have cleaned the flame trap with carb cleaner, the elbow that its attached to and a few of the hoses. All of the hoses look ok not really brittle so im not to worried about snapping any. I went to Tasca Volvo today for the gas tank heat shield recall and asked for a quote and it was over 700 . i Know i can do it myself but cant get to it at the moment so any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there any way to get to the Oil seperator without taking the intake manifold off ?

Not really but the manifold isn't all that tough. It is just that one stinking bolt back behind the power steering pump that you can't really see that is the tough one.Is there any way to get to the Oil separator without taking the intake manifold off ?
You will need a new intake manifold gasket and at least new hose clamps. If the oil trap isn't cracked it can be cleaned out but that isn't normally where stuff plugs up. On all of mine the hard lines were very brittle and they fell apart as I removed them.
I am as cheap as they come but I wouldn't go after this without having a new parts kit myself.

I noticed more power from mine while running A/C after cleaning the PCV system - which is good because I feel like my car is underpowered while running the A/C without really leaning hard on the turbo. Then, it's got plenty of power, but shifts at like 4000 RPM.
That said, your engine and engine seals will thank you for cleaning it.
Mine's a 1998 and the hoses snapped into pieces when I took them out - and I wasn't being rough. Being that your car is older, I wouldn't step into it without the whole kit.
Oh, and please don't buy the URO kit - it has been a huge headache for me and I'm halfway tempted just to tear the whole intake manifold out again and re-do it the right way. Call up FCP or IPD or whoever you order from and get genuine Volvo hoses to connect to the oil trap box.

The answer is this; yes you can to a point.
You still need to buy the above said manifold gasket and some hose clamps
You need to remove everything, inspect every hose and the box itself.
Many times I do a "partial", I replace one or two of the smaller hoses and elbows, clean the PTC nipple, clean out the box itself and the large expensive hose.
It may not be 100% but it can be servicable for several thousand miles

No you will have a flame trap hose by the throttle body instead. See cn90s post under mine in the PCV writeup pinned at the top of the forum.

Hey everyone, this was a pretty old thread that maybe I can revive?, so I’m in the middle of doing this job to my 04 V70. It’s a 2.4L FWD non turbo. What I was wondering is.. is there someway to clean inside where the top of the hose goes from the oil separator? Like the hose that connects to the top of the engine? I had a bunch of junk in my hose so I replaced the trap and a bunch of the hoses, but I have a bad feeling that wherever that top hose goes to may need to be cleaned out to?
