I don't know much about cars but I want to either replace my catalytic converter or take off my check engine light. I went to four different mechanics and they all say I have a code PO422.. which means catalytic converter deficiency. All I want is my check engine light off. Is there a layout of this cars converter anywhere? Is it possible to remove just the CAT or is it welded onto the rest of the exhaust system? Do I need to pay a mechanic to do the job or can I bolt it on myself? How do I know for sure that I need a new CAT? So stressful.... I just don't want to be scammed or pay more than I have to to fix this engine light.
Thank you!

catalytic converters do fail but the fault code is set due to rear O2 sensor value(s) being out of line. Rear O2 sensor can be out of line due to faulty sensor or upstream problems like partially clogged injector(s). Vacuum leak can do it too.
One partly clogged injector results in a lean cylinder and fuel trim will be richened until the low oxygen level for richened cylinders with proper injectors offsets the excess oxygen on the lean cylinder with low flow injector. The front O2 sensor is in range but the gases going through catalyst will not process and rear O2 sensor registers wrong.
Catalytic converter might be it but in so many cases it is not the catalyst and you can't take it back.
You really need to find someone with a proper full scanner to read all the values and do some testing to see what is really wrong.
