I took my 2000 XC 70 in to my mechanic to get the fuel pump fuel pressure regulator replaced. I had the car diagnosed at a Volvo dealership and I bought the parts there, but I just don't want to give them $2200 to actually do the job so I am having my local mechanic do the work. Anyway, my mechanic asked me if I knew that I had 2 fuel pumps. I had no clue. I guess if the dealership where I bought the parts knew that, they would be happy to sell me another pump so...why 2 pumps?
Is it a primary/secondary thing?
Here are some pictures I took while it was on the lift.
Why do I have 2 fuel pumps? 2000 XC 70

My question on this subject is why did they have to lower the gas tank to replace the fuel pump/sender?
Is there no access door under the rear passenger seat to replace the pump/ The 03 S60 also has 2 pumps/sender
unit and could be accessed under the rear seat. I also don't know why there r 2 of them.

It used to be by design. The durability of a 2 pump system was longer than that of a single pump. Although current pumps have proven more than adequate to do the job with only one pump Volvo has stuck with this time honored tradition of having 2 in some applications. Many new Volvo's have only one.
A test/access hole used to be provided if the pump ends up in an area where having a panel will not hurt rigidity/corrosion protection or cause noise. In some models it is less labor to drop the tank vs gaining access through the portal. It is also nicer to drop the tank and not expose the interior to gas fumes etc.

If you dig around in back, you will find an access plate.
In fact, they still use that cover for routing the pump wiring, but...
Remember that the 70 series cars are based on the FWD 850's.
If you have a FWD 70 series Volvo, the plate is in the right spot,
but many things were changed to accomodate an AWD drivetrain.
( And the '03 S60? Whole different car.)
The down side of the compromise is that the tires, fender wells, entire rear suspension,
a buncha the exhaust, etc. has to get outta the way to drop the fuel tank and get to the
top/front of the tank just to get the pump/senders out.
Probably saved Volvo a boatload of Krona! Thanks, guys...
And two pump/sending units? Well, the tank saddles the rear drive shaft...
This leaves you with two low compartments in the tank, hence, dual fuel
pumps and sending units. Looks like this:
I hope mine NEVER goes out! Riiiight...

I took some time to look at your cars diagrams in VADIS. My answer before was a bit too generic. In the case of a 2000 V70XC you only have one pump. It is separate from the sender unit on the other side of the tank. The sender unit also has a hose that allows the pump to draw fuel from that side of the tank as well. I will post the parts diagram/parts list and the removal procedure.

Interesting. The VADIS R & R calls the pumps out as plural.
I haven't had the pleasure of doing this job yet, so just chalk it up to denial...
"My pump is fine, I don't need to know
-My pump is fine, I don't need to know
-My pump is fine, I don't need to know!"

Thanks everyone! I gave my mechanic a link to this thread and MVS has helped substantially with this repair. The diagrams were much better than what the dealership had faxed to his shop. It's much appreciated!
Why do I need to remove the tank? if the fuel pump is located behind the left rear seat, I removed the back rear seat, disconected
the seat belts wires and done! It was there just in front of me, but I don´t have the tool to open it. so I had to put everything back on place. I took my 2000 volvo v70 to may mechanic this morning, and suddenly he found the fluel pump under the right back seat, total diferent place wich I knew before, so i got confused, do i have 2 fuel pumps...no kidding...urgh!
