XC70 and C70 A/C failure

Post by georgerei »

AC stops working
My 2000 XC70 air conditioner will stop delivering cold air when the amibent temperature is above 95 or so. I can turn the A/C off for a while and most of the time it will resume when switched back on. When it stops delivering cold air, the A/C clutch is not engaged. When the weather is cooler, the A/C never fails. Do I have a bad A/C clutch. By the way, my wife's 2003 C70 just started doing the exact same thing.

Welcome to MVS,

Your problems both sound like clutch shim problems if you have a good charge of R-134A.

I put together a series of threads from various sources in the database here.

Be sure to check the pdf files linked in the thread as they are good repairs.
The ghetto fix with the bread bag clips has worked quite well for a number of members as well and you can't beat it for easy.

Lee,

I have a 2000 XC70 with 125K miles and I have read all of the info here. My AC runs but it looks like the Clutch shuts off and then comes back on again. This happens all the time starting and stopping. Do you think the gap is off and can you tell me how to fix it? Where do you put the shims?

Thanks

Mike

I have a silly question: how do I know if the compressor is engaging? Thanks.
