Hello & thanks for reading this
It's a 1993 850 sedan. Failed inspection bc "you have an exhaust leak. Sounds like it's in front of the catalytic converter" So i put it up on stands and crawl under.
The exhaust system is actually in fair shape. No major rust thrus BUT at the front of the pipe where the manifold meets the exhaust pipe there's an odd configuration that has the four manifold pipes going separately into a strange housing that in turn goes into the exhaust pipe (one outlet pipe feeding into exhaust pipe) This is held together by a flange fitting and bolts w/ springs for tension.
This is where it gets strange...
I would assume the flange fitting is part off or attached to the strange housing mentioned above but no it "seems" to be a part of some heat shielding above all this .
The manifold downpipes (4) go into "strange housing" a single pipe goes from strange housing into the exhaust pipe, The flange fitting doesn't seem to be holding anything together and I can move the exhaust pipe a slight bit back & forth. This is the cause of the louder than usual exhaust (it's actually not very loud)
Has anyone done one of these. It looks lke a PITA to clear all that stuff out, exhausts are always difficult but this is severe.
Any suggestions. The tension on the exhaust system is forward so the pipe "jams" into the housing very welll but it's loud and I need an inspection sticker as the 940 is in rehab at the moment.

There is a good chance that the flex joint at the base of the header pipe broke. The shield that you describe is a separate item but it does bolt to the header pipe near the bottom.
A good muffler shop might be able to weld a new flex joint on but I just bought a new header from OBX Racing when my son's header failed at the same point. The new header and gasket was, as I recall, around $125.00.
