Must be nice to have a fuel gauge that works.

temperature plays a big role in this. so does time of day.
for any one looking to make there mileage reflect this performance It is a good idea to not use the cruise control and shoot for keeping the same engine speed no matter what the terrain and no matter the speed of traffic. In the turbo models (at least my t5)the cruise always over compensates and can never maintain a good enough speed. so i have found that maintaining a set engine speed is more efficient.

I don't doubt 40mpg for a second. I get 37, 38mpg going north on this 28 mile route routinely, in my '97 850, at least three times per month, and my average speed is higher than Justin's.

BUT the other direction on that route, going south, is usually 5mpg less on average, so there are directional variables in play (wind, grade).

Volvo's inline 5-cyl loves 60-ish miles per hour (~100kph) speeds. It's very efficient at those speeds. However in town it's a dog. I see 18mpg sometimes. I see this behavior in both my Volvos.

You're not the only one. My typical average is 20-21, highest I've ever seen was 24.5, thus I'm really not looking forward to the fuel cost on my 2,000 mile road trip next week (but I'll still gladly take the hit in mileage compared to driving the '84 Chevette that I originally planned on doing it in for the 35mpg :D). I am beginning to wonder if there's a large difference between the automatic and manual cars, as the manuals do have quite a bit deeper overdrive than do the automatics.

My driving is half 40mph country roads (rolling hills, mostly) and half city driving, so my normal mileage is pretty bad -- I'm lucky to hit 21mpg.

But on a trip down south about 150 miles a month or two back, and the subsequent trip back, I made about 29mpg, including a half-hour side-trip into downtown Seattle to find a usable restroom. I imagine that, if I was really trying to maximize my fuel economy, I could get well over 30.

(Taking the 100 pounds of steer manure out of my trunk would probably help mileage, too.)

Are these cars known to lunch O2 sensors bad enough to affect gas mileage like that without setting a code? Even on my last trip across 200 miles of completely flat highway (resetting the info computer as soon as I got on the freeway), I still only got 24MPG cruising at 65-70.

It can happen...especially if you've never replaced it. Mine went into a decline back around 150000 miles or something for no explainable reason.
