bearing or not?

Post by blunders »

Hi to everyone.

Can anyone please help me?

My 53 plate v70 has developed a strange noise from the front (i think o/s). The noise gets louder the faster I go and does not follow the engine noise (revs) and also is there when I select neutral while moving.

I have just jacked it up and checked all 4 corners for any movement on the bearings but they all seem ok.

I have also test driven the car and have found that the noise seems to go when turning right, which again would point to wheel bearing, but as I said they seem to be ok when jacked up.

You really need to describe "noise" a bit better and a "53 plate" means nothing to Americans
What YEAR car is it?

noisy wheel bearings rarely feel loose so that test is not too valuable in making a determination.
The fact it goes away when turning right may point to the right bearing. The weight shifts to the left on right cornering at speed.
Tires can have a carcass belt failure or a tread wear pattern that makes a roaring noise also.

Does the "53 plate" refer to the engine numbers in the vehicle ID number?
I believe the UK and a few other countries fix the tax rate on a vehicle according to engine size or taxable horsepower. Please tell us how that works.

Hi guys and thank you for you replies. Sorry about the confusion over the reference to "53 plate". 53 plate in the UK refers to the age of the car. In the UK a new registration begins in March, so a 2003 car registered from then up to September would be an 03 plate, then from September to march 2004 the reg would be a 53 plate.

Once again guys thanks for your help with this, It looks to me that its going to be the bearing thats the problem.
