What if battery in remote dies?

I can't start the car unless I open the door with the remote. If I use the key to open the door it won't start. I think this is something to do with security to minimise risk of theft.

So I'm just wondering how I avoid the risk of getting stuck when the battery for the remote dies. I don't think there is much point carrying a spare battery because batteries lose power over time, even when they are not used.
