V70 XC AWD Turbo - Is this a transmission issue?
V70 XC AWD Turbo - Is this a transmission issue?
Like so many other owners of this model, I replaced the transmission last summer, but used a local transmission repair place with a great reputation instead of the dealership - difference in price was nearly $2000. They had a lot of trouble getting it right, but they stuck with the original estimate, even though it cost them closer to what Volvo wanted, and they extended the warranty to 2 years. It's been running okay. Took the car to the dealership because the Check Engine light remained on longer than I was comfortable with - they tell me they found Code ECM-644A, Timing Hub Faulty. They recommended replacing the timing hub and solenoid (also thought the oilpan needed resealing), to the tune of $1350. The timing belt itself was replaced within in the last couple of years, and they indicated that this was still okay. So I'm hoping against hope that this is a transmission issue, which would be covered under the warranty. What do you think?

no. completely different problem. ECM code is not a transmission issue. The engine has variable cam timing and the unit that moves cam is not responding. The engine computer monitors this and sees the cam is not being positioned correctly.
Thanks jimmy - not the answer I wanted, but much appreciated anyway. Looks like I've got a decision to make - ditch it or fix it. I'm tempted to keep it at least until the warranty on the transmission is up in August 2012. It seems like I've replaced everything else on this car (suspension, tires, timing belt, on and on and on) - I'd like to recoup some of my investment. The service coordinator said that since I had replaced nearly everything, from here on out oil changes and regular maintenance could keep this going for another 100K miles. From her lips to God's ears.
Thanks again jimmy.
Thanks again jimmy.
