2000 S40 Need Help

Post by PondScum »

Any recommendations on a brand/type of fuel filter and thermostat? Also, anyone have some under the hood schematics on where things are and what their names are?

I have a broken hose I tried to tape up, which seems to marginally help. The people at AutoZone couldn't find it in the computer for me to order a new one. It comes down right by the radiator, from the big plastic air intake thing, to right below and between the manifold and carb, I think. Air seems to flow through it. Yeah, I'm new at this. It doesn't help that there doesn't seem to be a Hayne's 2000 S40 book at the auto store or online either. Also, to the right of the engine, some plastic housing is cracked.

I'll upload some photos tomorrow because I'm sure that description doesn't help.

The car idles high, surges power when idling, has crap for gas mileage, and doesn't accelerate well from a stop.

I have the following error codes:

P0128
P101
P0234

Aside from the motors on the two back windows being broken, the window control arm on the driver's door being broken, the antenna being broken, the struts needing replacing again, the hood needing a stick to stay open, and the hood not opening unless the release is being held or propped open when you go to open it, I have some problems that have to be dealt with.

Then there's some small, rubber, cone-shaped dooley-bob that sits on the throttle cable by the carb, I think. It deteriorated and fell off. I have no idea what it is or what significance it once held.

I've had a realignment; I've had replaced the struts/mounts and a handful of other front-end suspension things dealt with; I've replaced the tires, timing belt, water pump, many a seals and gaskets due to oil leaks; I had replaced a locked seat belt and had the computer reprogrammed because the ABS system was in a tizzy; and I've had a number of other things dealt with.

My low beam headlights aren't currently working.

This I can manage, kind of. Here's what has happened.

One of the relays on the CEM was going out, and the driver's side, low beam headlight would go on and off. I would hit the dash, and it would pop back on. Eventually it went out for good. I was told I would need a new CEM, and Volvo would need to reprogram the computer. Eff that noise. Then, the other headlight went out. One of the socket connections had broken. I replaced it, and the light worked fine. I fashioned my own relay and fit it on the CEM. All the lights worked again. . . . for a few months.

The new connector had some plastic housing that melted and shut the passenger side headlight off again. The fuse was also blown. No big deal, I will replace the fuse, strip some more wire, and add a new socket connection tomorrow morning.

The driver side headlight went out again. Then the daytime running lights and brights went out. That was just a fuse. I replaced it, and the brights and daytime running lights are back. I'll find out tomorrow if the fuse and connector bring the passenger side light back on. The problem is, I think the relay I added has blown already, as both bulbs are fine. If the passenger light doesn't come back on with tomorrow's replacement, then I can assume it took the other relay out with it. I guess.

I don't know what to do with this POS.

Did I mention I still haven't hit 100K?

I've been watching crash test videos on YouTube of S40s being sentenced to death. It makes me feel warm inside to see them destroyed.
